I currently have an onkyo nr801 in my HT and was thinking of buying an amplifier. I just purchased a set of energy rc30 and I'm eventually going to purchase the rc10's and the matching center. I was wondering if I purchased the emotiva lpa-1, will this be a big improvement as far as SQ and headroom? I will use the onkyo as a pre and upgrade to a pre with hdmi. Thanks for your help. If the lpa-1 is not a good choice please recommend.

Cube,
I have the rc's all the way around.. wonderfull speaker for price. I'm an ENERGY fanboy even lol. It's truely a case of loving what I have.... anyway. I would say the more power the better just make sure that the amp can go way down in impedence. I am having quite a bit of issues, and when I got my receiver, I was pretty sure I was done messing around, but I think those babies like more power for playing to their potential. I have the rc 50's up front myself, and will get the 70's later so I need as much juice as I can get.

Here is a link to the thread I started. Some great info from everyone else, as I had no clue what I was doing when I started this whole epic adventure

Dem,

Did you ever get a beefier amp/receiver to drive them with?

No sir, I have had some other costs come up and I am also working on a new type of "stand" for my screan and electronics. I will also first spend my loose cash on a DIY super sub =) for my next HT cost. I also want to buy a high end 2 channel and mono amp for the front 3 channels. Maybe a 3 channel, But I'm thinking a nice Mcintosh 2 channel... when i get the cash.

I started to realise the movies affected are few and far between and the sound from the energy speakers has been improving drasticaly. I think it's break in finaly showing it's face... I have been watching movies and gaming like3 crazy lately.

Before all that though I will be looking for some nice home gym free weights. the GAF is getting a bit harsh lately with all the frustration on putting this set up together and I'm not getting much help from the store I purchaced from anyway. Thestarted off ready to help but I think my pockets no longer interest them.

Emotiva LPA-1

Cube,
I recently added an LPA-1 receiver and it was an improvement over my lower end Yamaha (5860) driving my 4 ohm Onix Ref 1 speakers.

Your Onkyo receiver is a little higher on the food chain so you probably won't have much of a power difference driving the 8 ohm energy speakers.

LPA-1 amp.:D

For the Energys you shouldn't need anymore power, unless you have noticed the bass gets lean or sloppy at higher volumes with strained highs. Acoustic treatments and placement are going to be the most helpful things you can do to improve the SQ.;)

I recently replaced my Preamp and bulky, heavy, powerful power amps for a fairly modest receiver (Onkyo 605) in order to update to newer technologies. I'm happy as a clam. I don't miss the big amps at all. The new setup is simpler and, to me, sounds the same.
