Need advice so I can play a movie through projector and 5.1 surround

Hi, I’m new to this forum so I apologize if I posted this in the wrong area. I added pictures to this post so you can see what I am talking about.


I purchased a theatre in a box system. All the speakers jacks are located in the back of the subwoofer.

I also have a projector, I took a picture of it’s plug ins as well so you can see it.

I also need to purchase a blu ray/dvd player so we can watch movies on the projector.


I am not quite sure how to wire this all together. I’m looking for advice so I can play a movie through the projector and listen to my 5.1 surround sound. What kind of wires/adapters do I need and what ports/jacks would I need on the blu ray/dvd player I purchase? And, any suggestions as to how to wire that up would be appreciated.

Rather than squint at pictures, post up the make/model of the htib and projector....

*squint* If you have no plans to use an AVR, then your Blu-Ray player will need 5.1 channel analog audio out. Oppo is the only brand that comes to mind that offers a built-in DAC, but there may be others. Or you can use an optical or digital coax --> multichannel analog converter (example).

The real difficulty will come with video. That projector has only analog inputs, and a Blu-Ray player will only have digital outputs to comply with copy protection requirements. Unless you can find an old early generation Playstation 3 from before the HDCP craze, you're probably only going to be able to use that projector with a DVD player with S-Video, or as a fancy but low-resolution computer monitor.

My chief concern is with HDCP. If you use a modern Blu-Ray player with something like an HDMI -> DVI converter cable or adapter, the player will likely refuse to play copy-protected discs without an HDCP-compliant display. If you're shopping for a Blu-Ray player, I think you'll have a greater chance of success with a unit from 2009 or earlier with component video outputs. Since YPbPr is analog, there's a good chance the player won't have modern restrictions for copy protection. Something like this or this or this I think will be more likely to work with that ancient projector and some creative adapting.

Edit: Here's a Samsung BD-P3600 that has 7.1ch analog audio out + component video out, available used for < $60. I suspect an HDMI -> DVI converter cable would work with that player, and the audio would natively attach to your HTIB bass module without needing to be converted.

Edit 2: The Sony BDP-S550 also has 7.1ch analog audio out + component video out, with a few sellers on eBay selling for < $50. This unit seems to have a better reputation for reliability and continuing to work with the latest movie releases than does the Samsung. The Sony also retains an S-Video out -- so as long as you're fine with a max res of 480i (if I recall correctly), you will need no converters for this unit to work with your existing gear. I suspect that projector's native resolution is 640x480 anyway, isn't it?

Most DVI ports on projectors are HDCP compliant, but if possible, please post the make/model of the projector. That will allow us to look it up and give more detailed information. It's a pretty old machine though if it only has a DVI connection on it.

I am completely underwhelmed by that 5.1 speaker kit, but that's a different discussion. I think the recommendation for a used BD player with 5.1 audio output is a great way to go, and I think that if it also has component video outputs you will be pretty much guaranteed a solution which will work most of the time. It's certainly the least expensive option which should provide quality results.
