Need A New Sub and a few Opinions

Ive been looking for a new subwoofer for my living room home theater for 3 months and would like some input on my narrowed down choices. The square footage is 2000 and my budget is around $500. My three choices are as follows.

SVS PB10-NSD
HSU STF-2
Mordaunt Short 909 (A steal at $400 shipped. It had an origional msrp of $1200)

Im 50% HT and 50% Music
I perfer a sub that is well controled vrs 18hrz and sloppy.
Im leaning tword the SVS because of the great reviews, but have no experence with any of the above subs.

I'm not really a sub "afficianado"...but I lean toward the SVS in your list. I have the STF-2 and love it...but Idon't think it competes with the SVS offering.

Don't spend $400 on a crappy sub, save the money and purchase a svs, hsu, epik, or dayton (kit).

I found my svs isd-IV (with the upgraded nsd driver) locally for $500.

Good question a 20 x 10 x 10 would be ft3 or 16 x 16 x 8

I like SVS but if the sixe is right you might want a bigger one, SVS New PB12- Plus $999 pre-order http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-newpb12plus.cfm This 525 watts.

However the Mordaunt Sub looks like an awesome deal. I don't have personal experience with Mordaunt, but there Mordant Short speakers are highly rated and liked. The 909 is 30cm= 11.8 inches so it has a good size subwoofer at 300 watts. Yoiur price is great at wildwest it is $

Hsu makes good subs. The VTF-3 MK3 with Turbocharger at $723 would work very nice. http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-3-mk3-turbo.html


Summary: The are all very good subwoofers.
If you could audition the Mordaunt 909 and if it is loud enough, is in very good or excellent condition and sounds good then it is a NO-BRAINER.

If not loud enough i would choose the SVS new PB12-Plus ( I have one on order ) . For your room size, the PB10-NSD is probably not big enough. However the PB12-NSD at $699 might work.

Another good choice, but my third, would be a Hsu.

All of the subwoofers are brand new so the Mordaunt Short is a good contender, But i feel with hours of reading reviews the way to go would be the SVS, but I would like to know how well it does musically??? I bought a Veloydyne DPS-10 about a month ago and it sounded like ****. I returned it after a week of tuning and placement didnt make a change. I guess you cant polish a turd. Alot of thanks to you guys for the info.

I went with the Elemental Designs A3-300 12"/350watt sub, with the upgraded driver, and it comes out to EXACTLY $500 door to door. Best bang for the buck on the market if you ask me. It just isn't quite as pretty as some others... The equivalent SVS will set you back $200 more.

You get a 30 day trial with the SVS and thje Hsu, but shipping subs isn't fun. I've owned the top of the line from both SVS and Hsu. The big VTF-3 HO Turbo from Hsu was more musical than my current SVS PB13 Ultra. In the Ultras defence I have not tried tuning it any, and it does sound good, don't get me wrong.

I think the Hsu Satin Black VTF-3 MK3 AT $594.00 is what I would strive to get. If thats above your budget, contact Hsu Research and see if they would take half now and half later. It's an amazing deal on a fantastic sub that I promise will be VERY musical, and have more than enough output for your room. I would seriously consider this. It's 15% off right now.

my stepdad has a mordaunt short sub and it's ok for movies but it's not the tightest sub. there's a lot of huffin n puffin going on I guess from the port so I thought you might want to know that.

Well ive contacted both HSU ans SVS for their thoughts and i will be making a choice within the next week or so. As far as the Mordaunt Short, there is just not enough review out there for me, even though their price now is an attractive $400 shipped. I guess i will wait for the results on HSU and SVS and see what they have to say about their products before making my decision. Atleast I have a month to audition them. Thanks again for the input.

The Mordaunt Short sub shouldn't be part of the equation. It is nowhere near the same league as the other two. It isn't bad, but it ISN'T a steal at $400 (I've seen it for less brand new, MSRP is bull). I like Mordaunt Short a lot, but their subs aren't the best.

John, I have never gotten to hear any of the Mordaunt Short subs. Hope to some day. I must say I have read a lot of good things about them. Thanks for the info my friend. Hopefully, the OP can narrow things down even more.

I'm still waiting to hear back from e-mails to both SVS and HSU, but will be making my decision once I hear from them. Thanks for all the help everybody has given. There are alot of Knowledgeable people in the forums that have helped me.

What about the Mirage Prestige s10, or the Energy ESW v10 (Same sub different feet).

A lot of people (including me) thought these subs were overpriced at close to $900, so these subs got some negative feedback, in regards to the pricing, but they are often cheaper now, sales for $500, and they are really good, better than the svs pb10 nsd IMO musically, and cosmetically, although for HT I'd give to the pb10 nsd, but not by a longshot.

I know the v10 is often $500 now, and depending on your circumstances, may save you money over the PB 10 after shipping costs.

Subwoofer Help

Can anyone give me some info about the Mitsubishi M-10 subwoofer? I also have the M-VR800 receiver which works great, but all I get is a low hum from the subwoofer. Any settings I need to make here? Thanks

I would check that you have 8 ohms impedance. I also have that M-VR800 but use the Optical digital output from my 3D LED LCD HDTV to the Mitsubishi M-VR800 receiver. I am
useing a BOSE surround speaker system. two front, two rear surround,
a center, and the base subwoofer, Hard wired from the receiver to base,
and the other five all go from base sub-woofer to each one.
