Need a center channel

So after reading all the fabo reviews on the Axiom M22ti and what nots, I was like why not get a VP-150 as my center channel to go with my Studio 40's? Well after a little research I have heard these centers are not that great.

People speak of how muffled they sound when you sit in front of them and how they produce the most sound off towards the sides, due to tweeter placement.

So I need recommendations for center channels. Not looking to spend a ton, but I don't want to cheap out. If anyone can defend the VP-150 or VP-100, go for it. I would love a Paradigm, but they are $$$$ and then some. Thanks guys

I think I answered my own question. I guess I will bite the bullet and get the Paradigm CC-470, because of the Timbra matching. It will just have to dwarf my 20's until I can save for my 40's.

Get another studio 20. I think theres one for sale in the classifieds. BEST timber match. No over powering.

Yea sheep I actually read that in alot of the searches I did. Think it will sound as good as a dedicated/designed center channel?

I think it would. Most studios that use 2-way monitors use 5 identical units all the way around. Just be sure to use it vertically like you normally would. I seriously doubt that its vertical dispersion is anywhere near its horizontal.

I bought a VP-150 a couple months ago in anticipation of getting a pair of M80s and I didn't find it "muffled sounding" in fact I had to go in and adjust it back quite a bit from my present mains that are soon to be replaced. Just wanted to defend my VP-150 :)

Thanks Larry. Good to know. I am not a serious audiophyte. I do love me some surround sound though. Had it since I was a little kid and 5.1 first became popular. My dad had a sick setup.

Jax, what if I don't have room to stand it up right? I will try it both ways.

My biggest problem is finding the studios or any speaker in the matching rosenut color, most are black.

I suppose you could use it on its side, but remember that it was designed to stand vertical (and therefore sound best vertical). If you put it sideways, you might end up with unwanted reflections off the ceiling and a smaller "sweet spot" for the center channel. This is, of course, all speculation, as I have not compared vertical and horizontal off-axis measurements of the Studio 20.

The Studio 20 works great for me on it's side. No audible off axis problems more then you would expect when I have a group of people scattered about the living room watching a movie. With music (concert DVDs like HFO for example) I have only listened with a couple of people all sitting very near the sweet spot and that sounded good as well. I have not done any measurements however, this is all subjective.
