NAD T765 audio sounds scratchy after switching from "Stereo Downmix" to "Stereo"

I have a basic setup of NAD T765 and 2 PAradigm speakers (Studio 100 series). Since i have an old fashioned DVD player, I had not connected it for a while, and didn't watch movies (not even audio portion) thru the receiver.

Recently I decided to send my dvd player's optical thru the NAD AVR. When I insterted a DVD, it automatically changed to a mode for movie (perhaps 5.1 channel) where I couldn't hear the spoken audio, just the music. So I changed the mode to "Stereo Download", and the next time I played a CD, it sounded like crap when it was driven a lil hard (at drum beats, and at slightly higher volumes).

I turned off the receiver for a few hours (trying to reset whatever changed), and tried a CD again - and it seemed to play like before, so far so good. The next movie I played did the same thing to the audio CD playback in "Stereo" mode. I can't seem to get it to reset now.

Does anyone know what is going on? I haen't set it up with Audissey since my home theatre is still getting worked on. But the 2 channel Stereo should still sound good, heck, that's why I bought NAD.

Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

I have the same unit. No problem here on my end though. Did you do all the audio function setups in the menu. I'd double check all settings to make sure you have them all set correctly. Speaker levels, distance, etc. did you calibrate w/ an SPL meter? Also make sure that the input device you choose is properly set...analog on or off, digital on or off, etc. Hopefully it's just a setting that you missed. If not I think a call to NAD is in order. Their CS is superb. Ask for Bob Moran or Michael if you need to call CS. I hope this helps you.

You'll know when you have it set right...music sounds wonderfull for sure.

thanks for your response, pearsall.

no, i didn't do the setup since my apt living room is not acoustically good - I intended to go through the elaborate setup when i got a house (which is not far away).

But I still felt it should sound like it did before I played a DVD.

Anyway, I called the store (since i couldn't get a hold of the NAD specialists today), and he asked me to try a different player - said that optical outputs can be distorted. I did, and i can actually hear them differently.

Is my imagination playing tricks on me - I thought optical was a pure feed off the CD, and it didn't matter what player you used - the store rep and this last experiment don't seem to support that theory. I will try switching the players again after a couple of hours and repeating playing the same CD. The receiver is picking the source 1 correctly as "digital". Perhaps time to shop for a good player?

thanks also for the recommendation on the CS guys. I hope this works out. My god, do I miss that sound ...

Try the same player, connected with RCA analogs to the NAD. Note how different it might sound. The optical feed requires the NAD to do DA conversion, where using the CD's analogs outputs has the player do it. In this case, only the analog section of the NAD is in use. I thunk anyways. Well, an experiment nonetheless.
