N00bie Questions on A/V

Hi all. I have a Denon 2803 A/V receiver and Mirage 5.1 speaker set. I want to sell it and upgrade to something that handles HDMI and upconverts to 1080p. I can keep the speakers (though open to suggestions), but I want to upgrade the receiver. Any suggestions for what I should go with in the $1000 range? I plan to sell my Denon, so I hope to recoup a little cost; so a anywhere around $1000 is workable. I am an amateur audiophile, but I have a soft-spot for sweet, thick, mid-bass resonance. Thanks in advance....

Amps don't have a sound. Get the one with the features you like.

A new Denon would be a goof choice, or Marantz, or Onkyo, or Yamaha.

You probably don't need an AVR that upscales - rendering the video to a higher resolution. And most all displays made today including all flat panels can upconvert (change analog to HDMI) the incoming signal - and they also upscale the video signal - in other words making a 480i into a 1080P or whatever the display's native resolution is - 1080P/1080i/720p etc.

Upconvert is the process of changing an analog signal such as composite - component - and s-video to digital - HDMI. Very handy for the AVR/AVP to do this.

Upscaling is the process of changing a video resolution like 480i into 1080i/P. Not so necessary for an AVR/AVP to do this. Pass-through is handy and makes for less problems for the end user.
