Golf Ball-Sized Speakers? What's Next?

Back in the 60s and 70s stereo systems were judged not necessarily for their fidelity, but for the size and number of their woofers. Just take a gander at just about any speaker system back in the day and you'll see the 3- and 4-way, 15-inch monstrosities that people used to gloat about and play all that great classic rock music on. It was the "in" thing - and, in fact, in many cases it did represent the best that was available at the time (shudder).

According to Sony’s web site, the system features “big sound”.

Big sound?! How “big” can the sound be from speakers whose only driver appears to be a large tweeter!?

"Big" is relative, right? For the new iPod generation who are used to earbuds, those drivers are huge. :)

This would be a cool product if a) it actually looked like the pic above and b) you could use the speakers as golf balls all day and then hook them up for some critical* listening.

*of course by "critical" I mean "sit around and criticize how bad the speakers sound'

Those are new? I seem to think I've seen those before. Of course they are ridiculous but what do you expect?

I don't know how "new" they are, because I don't follow PA systems or Bose, but they are new to me and the ad said "new" :)

Sony speakers

From Sony Website:
Control Unit: 6 lbs, 10oz (3 Kg) Front Speaker: 0 lb, 2 oz (0.07kg) Center Speaker: 0 lb, 2 oz (0.07kg) Surround Speaker: 0 lb, 2 oz (0.07kg) Subwoofer: 29 lbs, 3 oz (13.5 Kg)

Those sony speakers only weigh two ounces each. If they were capable of any reasonable excursion or SPL they would fly across the room!

Coming soon to SkyMall...

I've got an idea! Buy both systems. Cut down the tower speaker to a reasonable tee height, cut away the hole divider in the toaster, put a golf ball speaker on the tee and use the corded remote as a club.

First one to chip in from 30' wins... FORE! :D:D

Sony tiny speakers look like my Apple iMac Speakers

I have one of the first flat panel Imacs and the speakers
that it comes with look exactly like these Sony.
Sony has been an OEM supplier to APPLE in the past.
They work fine if you are sitting at a desk about 18" away.
