My Yammy 1700 Randomly Shuts Off

Thanks for the recommendations. I have done some limited reading on the Emotiva LPA-1 so far. My question is if my Yamaha is rated at 7 x 130 wpc at 8 ohms already then how is the Emotiva at nearly the same rating at 125 wpc going to handle the demands any differently? I realize this may be a stupid question but I am trying to educate myself before I invest. Thanks for the help.

thats cos the LPA-1 is a power amplifier has beefier components, heat sinks etc which allow it to do probably very close to the true rated power of 125w rms per channel.

The yamaha is a receiver, so the amplifier section in the receiver need to compromised upon in terms of space as they also need to couple the pre-amp section in the same chassis. i doubt the yammy would do a true 130 w per channel all channels driven.

the emotiva power amplifiers can easily drive 4 ohm loads as stated in their website.the amp will do more power per channel at 4 ohms

if you want proof of quality and good sound, i suggest you read the review on audioholics and look at the internals(beefy individual heat sinks for each channel) and weight of the amp which would give you a basic idea.

i would personally buy a power amplifier as it definitely adds the much needed headroom and dynamics which makes good speakers sound even better.

Thanks Satish. Time permitting I'll continue my search for a good used 5 or 7 channel or just give in to a less expensive new one like the Emotiva. Cheers.

Reconnected and holding my breath

Finally got the banana plugs on and covered each with shrink wrap. Plugged everything back in and ran an auto setup. I do keep getting a warning that my sub volume is too high but when I check my HSU its only about 1/3 of the volume capability. This also drives the auto setup to back my subwoofer volume to as low as it can be set at the receiver. I manually reset all the speakers to small and put all the low frequency sound to the HSU and not to the fronts. I played the cable, dvd, radio, ipod and so far no auto shut down. I must admit I never really turned anything up and didn't give it much time to shut down. I feel like I am walking on ice! I have spent many hours looking for that perfect used amp for next to nothing without luck so far. I am inching closer to the Emotiva 125x7 although I would prefer to buy the 200 wpc model and be done, but I don't know if it is really necessary or not. Hanging on for a good deal I suppose....

How much ventilation and space do you have above the receiver. If you have componets sitting directly on top of the receiver with only a half inch of space you could be causing the amp to overheat. Receivers need at least 3 to to 4 inches of space to ventilate heat properly. If you can give it more space all the better.

Way Too Much Space

I have 30 inches above and a lot below. Not an issue.
