My sub response curve... Now what speakers?

Hello again,
I just finished building my subwoofer and am ready for speakers. Here is my dilemma. My sub will go very low, probaly 10hz with some great output, but I have been told that it might have a problem going high. My original speaker choice was the M&K s-150s that have a lower frequency range of 80Hz. They are THX, movie speakers. This is for a dedicated HT, no music. So, is there any way to tell for certain how high my sub can be crossed by looking at its response curve? I just hate to buy 2 fronts and then I have a big frequency gap between my subwoofers response and that of my mains. Here is my first EQ'd response with the Behringer Feedback Destroyer. I know it needs some work, but this is the actual first measurement. http://www.htguide.com/forum/attachment.php4?attachmentid=7038
If it won't work, it won't work.
Another option is a full range speaker. I like the energy C-series, but haven't heard the new RC series. Frequency response of 31Hz-24Khz. Would this be enough of a full-range speaker to set the mains as "large" and just run LFE to my subs, or do I really need a 20-20Khz range speaker to do this?
Lastly, what would I happen if I got the M&K's and there was a problem crossing at 80Hz, so I crossed them at 40Hz, and go another mid-range woofer that had higher extension and crossed it at 80hz? Would that just get very complicated?
Thanks everyone,
Roly

You should be OK. Although your speakers are only rated down to 80 (-3db) they should still have some response below that. And your sub has a response above 80 even though it's not at the same level (about -5 db from your graph). There should be enough overlap to fill the gap you were expecting.

Gmicheal,
Out of curiousity, what would be my subs rated frequency, on the high range? Do I look at where it drops from the 80dB level?

There is more than one way to rate it. Some rate them + or - 3db. Some use + or - 6 db. Some actually use -10db. Most good manufacturers use +/- 3db though. It must be a monster. What is it, 18"?

No, it is actually 4 15" drivers built into the front of my riser.
So how would you rate it at +/- 3 dB?

From gut ripping to 70 +/-3db.

Don't forget to put in hand rails.:D

Rolyasm, if it were me, I would feel more comfortable with main speakers that were 50Hz +- 1 db. I would want a bit more of an overlap with the M&Ks and the subs. There are plenty of good speakers to pick from that can do this. Any, that's my take on it.

We can't afford china, put the plastic plates sure do clank together. Last night I took my wife into the HT for the first time to listen to the subs. All I have is the sub, no mains. So I put on ACDC, who made who, and turned up the volume a little. ;) We listened for a bit then went upstairs. My wife said she felt a little sick! hehe. Success. She actually told me she liked it and was imagining our favorite deep-bass movies. I can't wait to find all the rattles in my room. The sconces may have been a bad idea. They are very noisy.
Anyway, I an going to audition some Atlantic Technology speakers this week or next. They go down to 50Hz and I hear are very similar sounding to the M&Ks.

Not sure if I would use the ped woofers on the bottom. If I did, it would give me a full-range speaker, but I wonder if the subs would interact with my subs. I'll let you know.

Have you gotten Christmas cards from the Power company yet? ;)

I can only imagine what this sounds like. We did a car back in my days of installing that had 6 kicker 15" powered by several kicker amps, I dont remember the wattage but I think in the 4k range. This car would hit 146db unweighted and it really shook you hard. Even with plugs in it popped my ears and made me a bit queasy.

How big was the alternator? And how many batteries did he have.
I had a friend with that kind of set-up in his car. I'd be out at the park with my home made wedge with 6 Jenson 6x9's cranking and he'd pull up and drown me out. So, I'd turn mine off. About an hour later I was giving him a jump start and pulling my speakers back out.

I dont remember the power supply aspects, but I believe only 2 batteries. He did have a couple farads of capacitance too if I remember correctly.

The beauty of the system was he didnt buy any of it, he somehow scammed multiple girlfriends into it.

It was something to behold, in a Beretta of all things (back when they still made em, so at least it was a new car).

6- 6.5, 6- tweeters, 6- 15"

Funny thing was, I built a bandpass for a single infinity 10" and used one of his kicker 500s to power it just to check it out, he turned to me and said "Now why do I have all this crap in the back of my car again?" Man that felt good.
