My SMS-1 Calibration Results

Any good guys? First try ever, seems to be decent though. Crossover is at 80Hz.

The before shot looks almost identical to mine. I suspect there is some more flatness to be gained by playing with it some more. You can try adjusting the Q function as well for each channel. Where they are bunched up at 63-80 Hz, you can narrow the Q so the channels don't overlap too much. IIRC, higher Q numbers create a narrower band, lower Q is a wider band. I got some great results from adjusting the Q as well as the frequency of each channel.

I'm sure it already sounds much better than before but since tweaking is free, play with it.

Not a bad house curve but remember, cuts are preferred over boosts and that boost @15Hz isn't buying you anything. Have you tried adjusting the phase and polarity on the next page? If you get that dialed in it will help the response at the crossover frequency.

Also if you haven't already, get the Outlaw Audio custom Guide to the SMS-1. It provides much better detail and guidance than the Velodyne manual.

Thanks for the pointers! I assume boosts are not recommended because usually its a null?

So whats the difference between phase and polarity? Is polarity + & -, and phase is the "0" or "180"? Are you saying flip them around in the SMS menu?

Correct, boosting a null is pointless. Better to bring down the peaks with EQ or simply move the sub(s).

Polarity and phase are similar in that adjusting polarity (+ or-) essentially adjusts phase 180°. The phase control allows you to 15° incremental adjustments. I always adjust the FR with Phase and Polarity to achieve the flattest FR before using the frequency specific equalization filters.

Im thinking about moving my gear downstairs, is it ill-advised as far as having a negative effect on the equipment?

Did you try moving the subs or the listening position? Very small changes in sub/LP can make a big difference with a null like that.

I had the same problem just to realize that the problem was caused byt the mic position. I now use a tripod and the result is far more accurate.

Hi guys , another sms1 owner here.
Pretty fresh also.I bought it almost a month ago.Did the set ups , and a friend who also owns one helped me. One day we diceded to update the firmware.From 2.1.0 took it to 2.1.4.All good except i get a noise like boiling water , regardless of the signal in sms.It is inaudible when the bass is or the general content of the movie is turned up , but audible at all times when vol is lower.My friends sms also does the same, but a little lower since he is using rca's and i use xlr's. We both have dual 15" passive subs.
Any idea or knowledge as where to find previous fw 2.1.3 would much appreciated.

You should also try adjusting your crossover, what you have now may not be good for crossing. Always let the room decide what the best crossover point is best not your ego about how low your speakers can go. I have Sig S8's and still cross them over quite high - 120hz, I may even go higher.

Try out different settings to see how that changes things.
