My ridiculously large sub

I agree. It's probably your room and the placement. The EQ should help though.
Nice build. It looks great.

Thanks. Like I said, I'm really diggin' the finish. Like those last 2 pics show, the box looks black most of the time. But when you shine a light on it, you see the brown and the "sparklies". Kinda like the Mystic paint on Cobra Mustangs a few years back.

I'm not too worried about the sound now though, as we'll only be in this place for a few more months and honestly this sub is probably WAY too much for the size of room I have it in. I'll take more time with it when we move to the new house. I just wanted to get the sub finished before the move.

Hey John,

You'll have to come over and help me dial it in once we get settled in Gilroy. :)

Looks great man. I'd love to have a nice giant sub but I am honestly too lazy to attempt a build.

Yeah dude, don't get started with DIY. It's totally addictive. Once you get started you can't stop. :D

No worries on that end, man - I don't even have any tools to get started with :D

Great looking build! The finish looks nice in the pics (even if you didn't follow Alex's advice ;)).

I have an eq.2 and it works pretty well. I use a Behringer A500 for my sub and it's fine with the RCA inputs. The only thing is that it cuts the level by 6 dB. I talked to eD about it and they said they did that to make sure it didn't overload the sub's amp if you used a lot of gain. You may run into an issue with the level being too low for the EP2000 since there's already a mismatch between RCA and XLR levels. I haven't tried the XLR input on my A500 so I can't say for sure if the issue's real. If it is, you can add an s-convert (I know, more money right?) to take care of it.

It sounds like you have some response issues in the room or with the sub/eq you are using.

It is also possible you are used to boomy/more bloated bass at a specific set of frequencies with your old sub. I would run a response curve with the 12" only and then with the 15 to see what kind of difference your are experiencing.

Nice job though! It looks pretty nice. Will you be doing grilles of some sort?

I'm sure you're right. I was listening to some music this morning and at the seating position the bass is nice but a tad muted. But when I got up and walked close to the sub, I noticed that the bass got VERY hot just to the right and in front of the sub. The corner wall is about 2 feet to the right of the sub. One of the PR's faces this wall directly. You can see the corner and wall I'm talking about in the second pic on Page 2. It's just on the other side of the exercise bike.

At the new house, the large sub will be in a corner as well. I think I may angle it so that the back wall is diagonal to the corner. That way I won't have the woofer or either of the PR's pointing directly at a wall. It's not ideal, but I think it's about the best I can do with the layout of the great room in the new house. It's either that or have the sub with the back against the opposite wall in the middle of the room. This is probably a better place for it, but it's so big that I think the wife is going to hate seeing it sitting there in the middle of the room.

I'll sketch out the floor plan of the new house and let you guys see what I'm up against.

I'm not planning on doing any grilles. I don't have kids so the woofer and PR's should be fine.

So I went to a guitar store today and got an XLR-to-RCA adapter. I spent about an hour trying to get the sub dialed in. I seem to have a pretty nasty spike at 25hz. I could never get 25hz flat without having the other octaves around it way too low. So the best I was able to do was get 20, 35 and 40hz all realtively flat with about a 5db spike at 25hz. Not too bad I guess.

Here's what the eQ2 looked like when I was done.

Very nice! I'm sure that you'll dial it in when you get to the new house.
I keep debating over weather I prefer the simplicity of the 2.EQ or the flexability of the BFD. How do you like the 2EQ?

Are you going to visit my sub build?

Eq question

A bit off topic but I get a muted(not to loud) sonic burst when I power off my sub using a Reckhorn B2 EQ...do you get the same thing using the ED eq2...? As for the new sub sure looks good and just how big will your next place be?

Regards, Bill

That's not as bad as you might think. It's probably room gain.
I think I'll try cutting the width down to .3 and see if I can get it right on 25hz and then try cutting 25hz as opposed to boosting the other frequencies. I'll see if that makes things any better.

I haven't noticed anything with the eQ2. The manual even states numerous times that you need to turn the eQ2 on before your amp to avoid a possible 30hz turn on thump, but I don't even get that and I definitely had the eQ2 on BEFORE turning my amp on numerous times.

I meant to bring in a sketch I did of the layout of my room but I forgot. I'll try to bring it tomorrow. The whole downstairs is just one big open room, so the new sub will have quite a bit of air space to fill in the new place.

Sorry dude, I didn't even notice that that build was you.

Cool to see John hepling you out. I like the eQ2 pretty well. It actually can do quite a bit with just the one band of EQ that I am using. The guy I bought the sub from sold it to me for $50 so I guess I can't complain.

I'm sure the BFD is a great piece of equipment, it just seems way too complicated for me. But if you can figure that thing out, more power to you. I'm sure it does a lot more than the eQ2. But the eQ2 does enough for me and it's simple.

Yeah, I'm a little afraid of the BFD. I don't even have a laptop to dial it in with. Just not sure if 2 bands is enough.
Great job on that sub.

The processor boxes aren't really that bad. Some tinkering and you'll figure them out. I recommend the dbX driverack over the Behringer, but, to each their own. Both aren't as bad as they look to figure out.

For sure cut the 25Hz mode instead of boosting the others. Boosting you should do very little of.

I did a little more tinkering today and got it a little bit smoother. Unfortunately cutting didn't seem to work very well. I couldn't seem to get 25hz down without dropping 20hz down as well.

But here's the weird thing. I decided to check the curve with just the 12" sub, then just the 15" sub, then with both of them together. The curves were pretty similar with each of the subs on their own. But when I plotted the curve of the 2 subs together, I was about 1db down at 20hz, 25hz and 35hz. How weird is that. I guess I'm getting some weird cancellation going on. So even though the bass sounds louder to me with both subs running, the db meter says differently.

So here's the floorplan of the new house and how I am going to layout the speakers.

Due to the enormous size of the new sub, I think I am going to have to place it behind the couch. I can probably angle it and get about 1-1/2 to 2 feet away from the wall, but that's about it. I originally wanted the subs to be in the opposite positions as they are in the drawing, but I don't think the wife will go for the giant sub in the middle of the room, so I guess I'll have to put the 12" there.

What do you guys think of this layout?
