Hi guys, just thought to share my experience with building a home audio system. As you can see from sig my original system (RXV 740, MS speakers).
Stage1 (my original system)
Some of my CDs sounded good to great but most was brutal. I couldn't sit for more than couple of tracks.
The reason: I believe the crossover was too high (90, this is fixed in RXV740). I tried different settings, but there wasn't much improvement.
Stage 2
So replaced RXV740 with Rotel 1057. 1057 had a very flexible crossover settings. How did it sound: the sound was very different. It took awhile for me to get used to it. It was very forward - in your face kind of sound, especially the mid range, while the treble was bit upfront but clean and detailed. Subwoofer just disappeared from the system - I really liked that. So my final verdict: just amazing. Is it a great system.....I think there are better systems out there....but for now I like the sound.
Stage 3
RXV740 was just collecting dust......so decided to build a second system in my bedroom and I wanted it to be a 2 channel system and wanted something different sounding than my main system. I know RXV740 will not be ideal for a 2 channel system. But cannot afford to replace it now. So realizing my constrains (the room etc) I decided to go for a set of bookshelf speakers.
Bought Paradigm Studio 20 v3. When I auditioned it had a very laid back sound. Highs were clean very mellow, very well laid mids and the lows....well it is a bookshelf wasn't expecting much....but it had a very control, tight sound to it.
So how did it sound in my bedroom. First impression, I'm pretty sure it will not disturb my sleep lol. The speakers are very efficient even @ low levels the sound came clean & full. So far so good.....but damn, the bass. It wasn't boxy or anything, it was tight, clean no revb but bit too loud for my liking @ moderate volume.
Conclusion:
Systems (receiver/amp etc) do play a good role in any systems. A correct set of speakers will bring the best out of a receiver. And room structure (my bedroom) play a very crucial role how it is finally going to sound.
The best sound of the two systems.....Rotel with Mordaunt Shorts (I guess I prefer very upfront sound to laidback and then again it all depends on your mood). I still feel with a better receiver than my RXV740 my digms will sound better....a good integrated amp might do the trick I guess anyone.
