My EMP E41-B adventure

Since these were (are?) on sale last week I went ahead and ordered them.

FIrst of all, credit to EMP for how quickly they shipped this north to Canada. They must have received payment on Friday, and apparently they arrived yesterday while I wasn't home. According to the guy at EMP they would take a few days for assembly etc, but it sure didn't seem like it!

I only started to set these up today. They came double boxed which is nice... a good gap to deal with shipping woes. First of all they probably weigh a good amount more than their siblings the EMP E5Bi bookshelves. Aesthetics aren't as pretty but eh, c'est la vie. I'll say that the high gloss finish at the top of the speaker is a very nice touch to go along with the black oak veneer. There's some biamping speaker posts. Um, HI EMP, can you explain to me why anyone would bi amp a 2-driver bookshelf with a 4" woofer?

Taking the grill off took some serious tugging... which is good IMO. These things have a damn sexy metal cone midwoofer aluminum phase plug :D

Unfortunately I ordered these unprepared, so I didn't have a particular amp to drive them with. I dug up an old Sony Receiver (rated at 100wpc  ) and hooked it up to my computer with a 3.5mm to RCA cable.

The first problem I ran into was a buzzing sound whenever the computer was connected. At first I thought it was noise from the computer so I ran downstairs and pulled out a USB sound card. Unfortunately it didn't help things one bit as the buzzing remained. At that point it crossed my mind that the problem wasn't the electronics, but the interconnect. So I quickly drove down to Future Shop and picked up the cheapest shielded 3.5 to RCA i could find. 30 bucks for a cable  maybe I should return it and order one online.

Got home, tried out the shielded cable. It worked!!

But unfortunately the first thing I noticed was a very muddy and distance sound especially at low volumes, but strong dynamics. Not a very good first impression, but my experience with the other EMP speakers told me that something else was the culprit. After some playing around for about 20 minutes I came to the conclusion that the Sony receiver was total CRAP! The 100wpc, yet weighs less than these bookshelf speakers amp, should have been a dead giveaway of poor biasing. More powerful than I needed at high levels, but royally awful at low/medium levels (nearfield).

That's right guys. I can hear differences between amps!! ;)

So the receiver ended up useless. I didn't wanna disconnect the Marantz, but I was dying to hear these things. I ran upstairs and found... another Sony :(

This one however was part of one of those 3-piece all-in one setups with two bookshelves and a built in CD player/cassette player so at the very least, it's designed to sound decent in small rooms.... right????

Well I hooked it up and immediately I was hearing the speakers. Now I'm not claiming this thing is the pinnacle of fidelity here but it's at least decent enough to not completely mask the sound. So Jinjuku, it's not just a difference, it's night and day! Let me bring the sony to your parasound comparision and i'll go home with your parasound! I've got a small T-Amp coming soon to replace this, but for the time being it'll suffice.

So far I haven't had much time to do listening (school's started again :( ) but i'll say these are very balanced speakers and in the nearfield the imaging is startlingly good. I'll update this thread with my thoughts sooner or later, along with pics. This is just the prelim ;)

Congratulations on the new speakers. I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts once you have them settled in.

I have owned a lot of receivers - and some of those Sony's are really bad.
Thanks for checking back in.

after a few more minutes with this other amp, i'm convinced it's equally bad. The reason it sound acceptable yesterday was because i had forgotten to turn the dynamic range compressor off. Turn that off and this thing's just unlistenable.

My T-Amp can not arrive soon enough. :(:(

I got my SMSL SA-50 amplifier in, and I've spent some time listening to these things.

First of all, I can't stress how much I love the bronze brush aluminum finish on the T-Amp. I was kind of concerned about getting random ebay asian brand instead of something like the dayton equivalent... but this thing is pretty. I'm driving it off my old Soundblaster Audigy sound card and it can honestly play louder than I care to listen - in the nearfield of course. It's rated at 50wpc, so assuming it's even half that, it's still more power than I'd need.

Since I don't really have my music collection up here on this desktop, I'm just listening to what I do have, from back when I used to use this computer more often.

Here's what I thought today:

Bara wa Utsukushiku Chiru - Hiroko Suzuki - Rose of Versailles OST

...Her voice sounds so smooth. You'd have to imagine these speakers were made for female vocals. Even my old sennheisers, which seemed to be along the same lines as far as emphasizing female vocals, didn't come close to this smoothness. I wanna comment on other aspects of the track.. the drums... the strings... but I can't. Her voice is too distracting.

Yasashisa no Okuri Mono - ??? - Rose of Versailles OST

Okay first of all I could listen to this on the crappiest wal mart radio and it would still bring me to tears. Anyways you could close your eyes and just get lost in the music listening to these speakers :D . Around the 1:15 mark there's some some small low level details that i've never heard before. On a whole there's an interesting balance of "things going on" in this track and the EMPs seemed to make them each just a little more distinct in the mix. I can't remember the last time I actually listened to this, but I definitely remember there being a lot less action going on. I've heard it enough times to know it pretty well, but never resolved entirely.

Ai no Hikari to Kage - Hiroko Suzuki - Rose of Versailles OST

More of the same. Her voice / smooth / etc. Besides that the tweeters really shined on this track, resolving the recording without muddying up a thing.

Adhi Holi Mar - G-Sharmila

- the sparkle in the treble was nice and distinct.
- the vocal imaging seemed to be anchored just right at the computer screens. It was well centered but had width too.
- the dhol line is punchy but seemed to be a smidgen recessed to the back. Might have been the mix.

Rinbu Revolution - Revolutionary Girl Utena OST1

I remember something about this particular version of this track really bothering me back in the day on my old Klipsch Pro Media computer speakers that have long been retired. The main thing I heard was how lacking a 192kbps MP3 is. I couldn't help but feel the source was being "suffocated" listening to this. I think what used to bother me was something about "the gaps" in between vocals. I wonder now if it has to do with the poor encode quality. The "bothersomeness" seems to be that much more distinct. I'll have to go downstairs and dig out a HQ version of this.

Yoake Umare Kuru Shojo - Youko Takahashi

The ability of these speakers to reproduce the ambience at the start of this track was really startling. Nothing else in the track "stood out", which might mean that the speakers are pretty balanced. It was just a treat to listen to this track again though after all these years. I normally dislike synth beats but this one's always had a sweet spot in my heart. I feel 15 again

Juunigenmukyoku Piano Solo - 12 Kingdoms OST

The decay of the strings is pretty clean. Fan noise from the now warm computer is getting noticible during the silence. I'm going to have to do something about this :mad:

I couldn't detect any bloat or other "speaker sounds". When I closed my eyes, all i could think was "there's a piano in front of me".. and a really annoying computer fan. In fact this fan has gotten so annoying that I can't listen any more.

I'll maybe post some pics in the morning. G'Nite. Sorry for all the positive comments. If I had TLS Guy's ears i'd tear these speakers apart properly :D
