My DVD player is pausing all by itself!

Exactly. If it works right now, then I'm in no rush to crack 'er open.

It was this disc and the X-Files disc that had this problem. And we rented Pride & Prejudice (the Keira Knightley one) and we encounted this problem then (back in March). But those are the only ones I remember having problems. I did take a closer look at the Platoon disc, and there were tiny, almost imperceptible scratches on the surface, but whether that was the problem or no, I can't say.

All I want to do now is hope that the player doesn't act up anymore. If it does, I'll go with the disc cleaner again, and hopefully that'll do the trick. Otherwise, taking her apart may be last option. Still hoping against having to do that, like, ever, though!

cheers,

We3ll, the only reason why I am asking all this is because I have yet to clean any lenses for some time. It takes a lot to get a lens in that shape not to pass the beam and read the reflections. If it only does it on some discs, how could it be a dirty lens? It should happen on all the discs and even on those that it happens on, why so late in the playing?
I think there are other issues here. But, that's just me.

It definitely doesn't happen on all discs. If THAT were the case, you can bet that player'd be replaced pretty quickly! It's happened to three discs in one year -- which seems like a lot to me. Quality control, and all that. I'm not terribly concerned, but if it starts happening again -- and with discs that it didn't happen with previously -- then I'll start getting worried.

mtrycrafts, I really do appreciate your suggestion, please don't think I don't. I agree that the small number of affected discs indicates some other problem. I'm just not good at opening up these things and peering inside without accidentally smashing/cracking some delicate component. So it may have to wait a while. Maybe I just want to believe that everything's okay!

Anyway, yeah, it probably is some other issue. But I don't want to go in there when everything seems okay. I don't know much about these wacky electronic gizmos; for all I know, the other issue has been sorted due to the disc cleaner. In which case, I ought to stay clear until it acts up again.

Doesn't stop me from lusting over that new Oppo, though. ;)

cheers,
supervij

Not a problem:) I am sure you appreciate the inputs and can accept the reluctance to open it up. I have limits too:D

Hey guys. I've had to take a break from watching my roommate's DVD of Platoon cos at chapter 22, my player is pausing by itself. The image does exactly that, pauses every few moments, and in the moments when it isn't paused, I can hear some of the soundtrack. From what I can see on the receiver, a signal is being accepted, then it isn't, then it is, and on and on. I had this happen once before recently on a DVD from X-Files Season Six set, but it was very brief -- nothing I worried about. But on the Platoon disc, it's happening throughout the whole chapter.

I assume the fault is that of the player, since that chapter of the DVD plays fine in the DVD-ROM drive of my computer. Has this happened to anyone else's machine? And if so, is there a way I can fix it?

Man, I hope it's an easy fix. My player is past its warranty, and I really don't want to have to buy a new one. Any practical suggestions would be most welcome.

I am having this same exact problem with my DVD players. This may sound weird but it also started happening when I was watching the X-Files DVD Episodes. It skips in the same spots when I rewind and it messes with the audio too.

I FINALLY purchased X-Files season 1-9 on DVD (Region 1, not copies) the originals with the bonus disc's. I then began to watch a few episodes a day up until today where I am now on season 7. I have went through 2 different DVD players because of the same skipping problem. I had a Sony DVD/VHS combo player and a cheap Cyberhomes player. I am now on my old model PS2 and now today it started skipping.

I have tried the disc head cleaners, spraying it out with canned air, and hooking the player up to my receiver and to my TV in all different ways. The weird thing is, I take the same X-Files disc and try it in a different DVD player in my bedroom and it works fine.

The only thing I can come up with, is that for some reason, watching The X-Files DVDs for a while causes the player to malfunction permanently. This is the same thing that has happened to my other two DVD players. I am assuming if I watch The X-Files for a long period of time on my player in my bedroom I would eventually have the same problems. I have found that all these players work perfectly but after a season or two of watching The X-Files they start to skip.

I have tryed:

Composite
S-Video
Component
HDMI from Composite and Component
Analog Sound
Digital Sound Optical and Coaxial
Straight to the TV
Straight to the Receiver

Result is the same skipping problem
Seriously, now I am mad that it has damaged my PS2.

Sounds to me like the UFO alien community is trying to prevent humans from getting any ideas from watching the X-Files. What clever little bastards! :D

The truth may be out there, but trust no one, Mr. Bigsilvs!

Seriously, it does seem kinda . . . spooky . . . that your player starts acting up after watching X-Files DVDs. Years ago, the same thing happened to my old Sony player. It was my very favourite episode of all time: a season fiver by the name of "Bad Blood". It kept skipping and pausing all by itself. Then for no apparent reason, my Oasis "Familiar to Millions" DVD started doing it too, but fortunately it was only during one of the interviews (which does suck, cos Noel Gallagher is one funny cat during interviews). I pulled out the ol' disc cleaner, but no go. Fortunately, that particular DVD player still had two weeks left under warranty, so the shop repaired it free of charge, and the problems were gone.

And it started happening again with my new Pioneer universal. Thankfully, the disc cleaner seemed to fix everything. For now . . .

All I can recommend, Bigsilvs, is to either have someone who's qualified crack 'er open and fix whatever needs fixing or get some kind of disc/lens cleaner. One man alone cannot fight the future, but I hope it works out, Bigsilvs.

cheers,

Well, I have watched, in its entirety, Star Wars Episode 3 on my trusty PS2, and it worked fine. I guess as long as my players are able to play all the Star Wars DVDs, I can deal with it:) As far as the X-Files go, I might have to shell out so more dough for another cheap DVD player or watch it on my PC to get through the rest of Season 8 and 9. Then I might pass on my problems to someone else by selling all of them on eBay;)
