i think youll agree with me that the amplifier is not about the sound output, but about the sound quality.

Hmmmm.

Have you seen measurements on that Denon? Where exactly on the measurements do you see something that makes you suspect poor SQ from that AVR?

If the AVR amps can drive the chosen speakers to satisfying levels without clipping, and has enough headroom for dynamic spikes, then there will be absolutely no benefit of external amps.

The only reasons you would NEED an external amp is if the AVR amps can't drive the speakers to satisfying levels without adding distortion, or if you had 2 ohm speakers and the AVR amps aren't 2 ohm stable.

Again, try it with the AVR FIRST, then if you aren't where you want to be, then consider an external amp.

If the AVR amps drive the speakers without any problems, then the $ would be MUCH better spent on acoustic room treatments (i.e. an area that has not yet hit diminishing returns) or better speakers, vs an external amp where you are already approaching diminishing returns

Originial poster, when you get everything setup, borrow an external amp, doesnt matter that wattage- and power your mains with it and do an AB comparison. i think youll find the external more sonically pleasing and i also believe youll probably end up going to external amplification. to my ears, there is a big difference in sound quality thats just as huge as changing speakers.

dont believe the big lie i believed that all amps sound the same in an abx test. its a huge lie- and thats why many people believe it. if you want people to believe a lie, tell a big lie, and tell it often enough.

again, just test it for yourself- dont write it off without at least testing.

The wise advice is right here. Borrow an external amp if you can. If not, then use the AVR amps, then decide for yourself or find an external amp with a generous return policy.

However, my advice remains--consider using the $ for room treatments or pick up that pair of subs, before you consider the external amps. Room treatments = guaranteed improvement (unless your room is already sonically ideal). External amp = maybe/kinda improvement (unless the AVR amps are not robust enough for your chosen speakers, in which case the external amps make sense).

By the way, I indeed gave a dislike on post #18 because you tried to put words in my mouth, and those are words that would never come out of my mouth.

Thanks for the advice from both Slippery and Big O. It seems you guys both agree on that fact that it would be a good idea to borrow/test an amplifier to see if i like the difference.

I think it will make the most sense to set everything up as i have already mentioned in Post #1 and listen to it that way for a few weeks or a month. Then borrow an amp after I'm used to it and see if i notice a difference.
