My broken remote

My URC R50 remote which I love was sitting on top of the couch. My son knocked it off and it landed on the tile. The LCD screen no longer displays the images, I only get a bright white light on the LCD screen on the remote.

It's a sad day when the trusty universal remote bites the dust.

I hope it isn't too painful using multiple original remotes until the URC can be replaced.

Not to be preachy but that's a bad place to put a remote when the floor is tiled.

Call URC and tell them what happened- they may sell you one at a discount. OTOH, it's not a terribly expensive model.

Thanks for the remarks. The room is all carpet. the kitchen which is behind the couch is tile. Already called URC, the remote works but lcd display not working.

I'm not familiar with the R50. Is it PC programmable? If not, does it have a reset function? (Of course trying that may make it impossible to use the remote if it doesn't fix the problem -- i.e. no way to reprogram without the LCD screen guide)

I have an 850 (PC programmable) and the same thing happened to me (the screen went blank but not as a result of dropping it). I plugged it into my pc, performed a transfer, and all was well.

It is not pc programmable. I am trying to figure out how to reset it.

Good remote, but uses batteries pretty quick. The best part was it was the first device I've owned that had all the right codes for the Oppos. The good news is, they can be found pretty cheap on amazon. I got mine for $50 new last year and looks like $83 right now.

I did love my remote. I am going to get another. Should I get R50, Harmony 880, or Harmony One. Need to control TV, Receiver, Dish Receiver, DVD. Need it to learn and perform MACros.

I have a harmony 900 as well. They work off a little differently then URC remotes in terms of macros. The harmony remotes do not permit you to customize true macros. They are "Activity" based remotes. Using your pc, you select the activities you want ("Watch TV", "Watch a Movie" etc.) then assign your components and inputs to the various activities. Then when you press "Watch TV" on the remote, it runs its own macro that turns everything on and switches inputs. When you switch to something else (e.g. "Watch Movie") it turns on what you need for watching a movie and turns off what you don't need.

In short, the harmony remotes are not as customizable but for normal set ups they work very well. I like my 900 more than my URC 850 (which I still use in my bedroom).

If it were my decision, and I didn't need RF, then I would opt for the Harmony One.

Just bought urc r50 mint condition for $60. Also just finished putting up some acoustic panels. I got them from acoustimac and very impressed with the build.

The Harmony 890 has RF capability. I am thinking about getting one, my RF20 partially quit working, the LG BD390 sensor apparently no longer works. But I went to uVerse and got the uVerse RF controller; mainly watch TV so native controller is always better.
