Musical sub for two channel system OR full range suggestion

I've been having a ***** of a time deciding on a musical sub for my two channel system. Especially since I only have speaker level outs (no sub-out or LFE channel). So, I can't hook up to anything that does not have speaker level inputs (or some means to convert speaker to line, such as REL and ACI).

I had been pointed to the REL Strata III, but those are only available used now and I'm tired of waiting. Others I looked at are HSU (VTF-3), SVS (25-31 PC+), ACI (Force), and AV123 (UFW-10).

Does anyone here have strong feelings for a musical sub (around $800) that would work well in my system? I would really appreciate the help. BTW, my speakers are KEF Ref. 1's, that extend "WAY" down to 55Hz (yes, those quotes indicate sarcasm).

As an alternative, I am getting so tired of this search for a sub to match with my KEFs that I am considering scrapping the idea and just getting a real full range speakers. To be cost effective, though, they would have to be at or around $1200. If anyone has a full range speaker that can outperform the Kef's with an $800 sub, PLEASE let me know!

For music only, I'd give the nod to the ACI Force. The Force and its larger brother the Titan (since the Maestro amp has been reworked I don't know what it has anymore) are known to blend well with musical speakers. One reason this is true is that the plate amp crossover on the Force (and Titan)
is more flexible than the other brands, and goes down to 35Hz.

Google some Force reviews, and check out the ACI forum at:

The others are good subs also, no bad choices here. :)

Onix UFW-12

Check out the B-stock page for an Onix UFW-12 (without R-DES) for $750. The sealed design should provide great musical performance and the 12" woofer also play low enough for HT.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I believe that the UFW-12 does not have inputs for a speaker level connnection. That is, it only has (a) line level inputs and (b) LFE input.

I actually wanted to get the UFW-10, but it has the same problem. So, unfortunately, I'm back to my initial question.

Aw, that sucks. I was going to suggest that one too.

How about the SPL or SPLR series from Velodyne? Small sealed subs. Sound very nice with music and movie playback.
