I currently own a Denon DVD 2200 player and it can switch between PAL and NTSC but I cannot find any information on whether or not it can play multi-regional DVDs. I have recently found and ordered some very nice limited edition box sets from Korean and Asian DVD retailers and they are region 3, but I cannot find any documentation on whether or not this player can handle multi-regional source material. Anyone have any idea?

These DVDs are double dips for me, I have them already, but the collectors materials and cases that come with some of these Asian Imports are absolutely incredible and I just had to get them.

I have a regionfree 2200 (came new regionfree, some deal my hi-fi store has with denon). If you want to make yours regionfree you will need to do a firmware update. See here for some info otherwise do a search.

If you update your firmware to the regionfree one you may have probs with any waranty issues.

cheers :)

PhillyDan,

How do you switch from NTSC to PAL? I've had a 2200 for about a year and I never knew you could do this. What burns me is that I recently attended the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland and they had a boat load of DVD's I wanted to buy that you can't get over here. I didn't buy them because they were PAL and I assumed they wouldn't play on my DVD player. I also assumed they wouldn't play on my NTSC TV as well. Do you have a special TV that allows you to play PAL DVD's or is that not necessary?

Go to 'Video Setup' on the 2200 (pic 1)
Go to 'TV Type' (pic 2)
Select your TV Type (NTSC, PAL or MULTI(for multiformat tv))

The Denon will automatically Play PAL and output an NTSC signal if you select tv type as NTSC. As long as you have no reigon control issues with that perticular DVD

I am in PAL 25fps zone. I can play NTSC DVD's no probs now. But the denon outputs a converted NTSC to PAL 60 fps which my older tv could not show properly, so I used this as an excuse to purchase a projector and a multi-format TV. You may not have that problem.

cheers :)

Spiffy, The Oppo is multi region, meaning it will play NTSC and PAL. However it is not region free. (0) However there is a hack, through the remote that will allow this player to be set for region free. And play all dvd's from all countries.

There are several websites that post links and how-to’s for software mods (called hacks) for dvd players that will enable multi-region playability. Start with videohelp.com

I don’t think altering the firmware of your player to allow multiregional play is illegal in the US. It is in some countries. I found out about the above website from a recommendation in the askjeeevs database while looking for something else. I don’t think jeeves would advocate illegal activity or post a link to a website that supports illegal activity.

Some people feel that enabling multiregional play is not stealing anything because you paid for your region-3 dvd, all legit and everything. When you buy a dvd you also buy the right to decode it and watch it, for your own private use.

I feel that the media corps have a right to market their product as they see fit, to their greatest profit potential. If that means limiting product releases geographically, then so be it. But I feel those arbitrary marketing boundaries would/should apply only to businesses. Any business that would display/decode a dvd out of its region is stealing from the marketing potential of the media corps. As an individual decoding a disc for personal use, you do not interfere with the marketing schemes or profit potential of the media corps.

I looked for anything from Denon that disclaimed warranty liability for altering a dvd player’s firmware. It isn’t there, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Denon refused to do any warranty repairs if your alter the firmware. I bought a Denon player specifically because multiregional hacks are constantly being made available for it, tho I haven’t done it.

Oh, btw, there is a multiregional dvd hack available for your Denon 2200.

Off Topic: And for anyone with a Motorola v710 cell phone on a Verizon plan, there is a hack available online to enable the BlueTooth functions that are available with any other plan provider, that only Verizon has disabled, and is being sued over.

I did read the manual on the new HVD-2085 NeuNeo. And the manual clearly states that it is region free, so no hacks would even be needed for this player. But it does not say anything about support for Divx. But this is not to say that it can't or that the company will not use a firmware upgrade in the near future. You could email them with what possible firmware upgrades they will be doing. They do say that at the moment it will only do up to 1080i through the HDMI. And it will do up to 1080p through component (RGB). But there is a firmware upgrade coming out to make the HDMI able to go up to 1080p. So Divx is not out of the question......
