I live in the UK and I need a Multi-Region/Region Free DVD player. I want something quite cheap but reliable. I just need something to play DVDs, it doesn't need to have loads of extra functions. Can anyone recommend any decent Multi-Region/Region Free DVD players?

Unlock an Oppo.

The easiest solution is buying an Oppo 970/981 and using the unlock key. They make a great player with good upscaling ability and they also allow for playback of pretty much any format minus HD DVD and BD.

Here are the directions:

With the Remote control press setup and then press 9210, it will display a menu with region code (default - 1) Enter 0 to make it region free.

I found this out when I contacted Oppo. They couldn't directly tell me how to unlock the unit, but nudged me in the right direction. I am only aware that it works on the 970 and 981, but it seems likely it would work on the 980 as well.

It works on all of them AFAIK. Yes, go with one of the Oppos.

Philips makes some region free DVD players. I'm not sure about the model No.
Also Oppo has good reputation plus it is also region free. Though I have no personal experience with any of the two.

I have an Oppo DV-970HD and in setup, I can select NTSC, PAL or Auto.
Is your code 9210 for models that didn't provide the PAL selection in Setup?

Looking at the user manual I don't think so. It seems that this setting just dictates how the player will actually output what it reads, but if the player is region locked it still won't play discs of the other regions.

Check out the top of page 16 under "TV System Selection" for more information.

The Oppo players look good, but the only ones I can find (from British retailers) are the newer HD players. I don't think they're a very well known manufacturer in the UK, I'd never heard of them. Can you recommend any other players?

Cambridge Audio's players are essentially the same internally as the Oppos and should be easier to find in the UK. I am pretty sure they are region free from the factory, but if not, there is likely a way just like with the ones mentioned to make it region free too.

Another vote for Oppo depending on availability in the UK.

OK, entered code 9210 and made Region 0.

Thank you so much. I ordered a DVD from Europe and this will remove cause for frustration.
