Multi channel vs stereo only

I currently have a great stereo set up for two channel listening using tube technology etc. Is there a switching device which can utilize an additional surround sound IR for HDTV only, bypassing my tube amp when in HDTV mode , that will also power my main speakers to a 5 speaker channel application. I do have an AR Sp16 preamp that can probably handle the proposed configuration. I do not want to give up the stereo capabilities of my VS110 amp as the sound for stereo listening cannot be duplicated with an IR, I have tried to attempt this with poor results, believe me.

I don't understand that statement. IR = Infra Red which is used by a remote control to send codes to your equipment.

Do you mean a multi-channel receiver cannot duplicate the sound of your tube setup when it is in stereo mode?

Clarification

IR Integrated reciever surround sound I am trying to take advantage of my speakers in both an HDTV 5 channel system and also still use my 2 channel stereo system. The switching device would control the main speakers and the amplification from 2 separate sources.
