Keeping up with the Smiths
Pardon me in advance for talking about the relative strengths and weaknesses of particular movies in this forum , which was intended for audio and video discussions.
Again I reiterate that I continue to be suprised at what people like and don't like in films. I would place Mr. and Mrs. Smith in the same catagory as True Lies. Both of these films are completely ridiculous while still being entertaining. They are by no means intended to be taken seriously and they use allegory to make light of our everyday ordinary lives by contrasting the wildy crazy lifestyle against our reality and showing that the very simple problems of everyday life still exist even in extreme circumstances.
Now, when the plot holes in a film are a mile wide and the characters aren't developed or do things that are completely out of context to the story or character, then this really irritates me. Films like Ronan or Spy Game attemp to be real with extreme circumstances, but these films are of a completely different genre.
If you compare something like Charlie and the Chacolate Factory or Harry Potter to Mr and Mrs. Smith then you can easily see that in story telling you musn't always obey the laws of physics to tell a story. If the story is attempting to be real then that is one thing, but when the world is one of James Bond or Star Wars you have to realize the context in which the story is being told. Neither of these examples have realistic portrayals of real people, obey the laws of physics or have statistically possible odds or circumstances in which they take place. They are intended to be extrodinary.
Suspending belief is part of the fantasy of movies. I agree, the circumstances in which Mr. and Mrs Smith took place, and they way they conducted their buisness was pretty out there. After watching the first half hour of the movie I was clear on the level of realism that was expected to see the rest of the film. This was not a stellar film to begin with, but it was decent and somewhat entertaining. IMHO
Movies are movies, no more no less. Most of them are pretty bad. Once in a great while an excellent one comes by. We can either make them ourselves or suffer whatever comes our way.
