Hey all, I was watching Transformers and noticed that when I set my receiver to 'surround decode' it only goes to MPCM. Whats the deal? I though MPCM is an analog signal.

I popped in Miami Vice that I have in SD-DVD and it went to Dolby Digital... I could have sworn I saw it say TrueHD or something the first time I watched Transformers. I need to get a longer HDMI because they are a little tight right now with the 1m cables. I double checked that by sliding things around so that none of the cables had to make a sharp bend and no change.

Insight please, or is MPCM a good thing...or am I retarded.

Thanks,

MPCM = Good. The HD-DVD player decodes the TrueHD signal and sends it to the receiver through HDMI via MPCM (Multi-channel Pulse Code Modulation). It is digital and you are hearing the TrueHD track. If the receiver says "Dolby Digital" when playing an HD-DVD than something is not right.

Ah perfect. Ok, I thought it was not processing right. Thanks.

It was processing correctly. The HTR-6080 does not decode Dolby TrueHD internally, but rather takes the MPCM from the player (which is still digital).

Hey I thought that Transformers on HD-DVD had no TrueHD soundtrack!

DD+ is still decoded in the player and transmited via MPCM.

The audio on the SD version sounds amazing as well. I just got my HD DVD player going and haven't watched too much on it yet, but so far I really can't tell a difference between DD+ and regular DD 5.1 but then again I haven't heard TrueHD and I've only watched a couple movies on it. I watched Flags Of Our Fathers which has an excellent DD 5.1 track on SD DVD, but I wasn't really wowed by the DD+ track that I heard. It wasn't by any means bad, just not THAT much better, I guess maybe I'm expecing too much, or I just need to give it more time and watch move movies.
