mp3 player to receiver no sound

I hooked up 2 RSL CG-6a bookshelf speakers using banana clips to an ONKYO TX-DS797 AV receiver. I'm getting nothing from the speakers.

I hooked the left speaker to the left main connections on the receiver, same with the right. I plugged an mp3 player into audio jacks for dvd, cd, video 1-5, had the receiver set to these, but no sound on any of them. Seemed straightfoward from youtube videos, but I get no sound from the speakers. MP3 player plays music when I connect headphones to them.

I'm a newbie, so want to ask if anyone has an idea. The photos show the speaker connections, the others show the wires going to the left and right speakers. The FM and AM antennas are also connected.

Thanks for your comments!

My first question is: have you read the manual?

The second question is: Have you done the speaker set up and the input assign set up?

If no, to any of the above, do it before posting again.

This is an old receiver, it was working before you attached these particular speakers? You might try and find a manual and see if there's a reset instruction to start with a clean slate....

I linked him to the user manual. There is no reset. It does need speaker and input set up though. I would bet it was unplugged so long, there is no set up in the memory and he has to start the set up from square one.

Thanks for the replies guys. I’ll go back into the setup menus and see if I can get it to produce sound this way. Tls, you don’t have to be that harsh. This forum was supposed to be for beginners, so a bit of patience was expected.
Thanks guys again.

There is nothing harsh about what I requested. It was a request for the information we need to help you. We have numerous posters who think we have a video to look over their shoulders and see what they are doing. Without precise pertinent information we can not help you.

p.73 of the manual after suggesting a soft reset first by unplugging the unit, then:
"To reset the surround mode and other settings to the factorydefault settings, hold down the VIDEO 1 button with the TX-DS797 turned on and then press the STANDBY/ON button.“CLEAR” appears in the front display and the TX-DS797 entersthe standby state"

@rall275 did this receiver work before or is it new-to-you?
