Motorola Cable Box + Sony Playstation 3 + Toshiba 37" Regza + Denon AVR-588 = Problem

Instead of spending money for audio quality I most likely will not detect, I decided to jerry-rig a setup. I have removed all audio/visual plugins from my receiver and connected them straight to the TV and then sent a lone optical cable from the TV's out to the receiver's in.

Figured it would be that easy, set it to optical, and then be done... but for some reason, it does not want to make it that easy.

Overview:

Nintendo Wii plugged into TV via Component AV
Playstation 3 plugged into TV via HDMI
Cable Box plugged into TV via Component AV
TV Plugged into AVR-588 via Optical

No sound.

Anyone know any solutions? Thanks.

On most TVs the digital out is only to output sound from the TV's internal tuner when you have cable or an antenna connected directly to the TV's antenna input.

The Regza models (not sure if it is all of them, but the lx177 certainly did) will also pass PCM or DD audio to the digital out IF it arrives digitally. The only way to send a TV digital audio is via HDMI. The PS3 connection should work unless there is a settings error somewhere but none of the other devices would work without an HDMI connection to the TV.
