Most dependable subwoofer?

What is the most dependable subwoofer for under $300? I got a JBL Venue series Sub12, and the circuit board fried right after the warranty expired.

There is practically no such thing as 100% dependable in electronics. JBL has had amp issues on some of their subs over the years, so it isn't entirely unexpected. What you REALLY want is a company with great customer service when these sorts of things happen IMO. Take a look at Rythmik Audio, SVS, HSU, etc...

I say go with the company with the longest warranty... HSU has a good record....

But the most reliable sub IMO would be a passive sub with an external amp.

That's both easy and hard to answer.

The easy part is it's the one that hasn't failed in the longest time.

The hard part is that we won't know until it's still going after all the others have failed.

I had a Velodyne VA-1210 that lasted 14 years before the surround on the passive radiator died, and it was replaceable for $50.

Stick to a name brand with a long guarantee and a decent local dealer/repair network. With everything being web-based nowadays that last one is virtually impossible to find.

I would also add that how you use the sub will affect its reliability. If you frequently push it hard, it will have a shorter life. Take it easy with your sub and it will last longer.

I wouldn't recommend that sub to anyone, regardless of reliability.

Subs are typically not hard to repair. I recommend a passive sub for the most reliable option.
