More and more audio reviewers from mags liek Sound & Vision, Stereophile, and Home Theater Mag are including trurntables and vinyl in reviewing speakers and or receivers. Its nice to see they bring that option back in. Soem day I hope they'll begin to review turntables on a more regular basis instead of leaving it as a novelity.

Gosh, Stereophile has "Analog Corner" every month, although I usually skim over it as I don't miss the vinyl. More power to you if you do. They also have "In the Round" for surround sound and home theatre, too. With that said, I think John Atkinson has firmly rejected tubes and vinyl for SS and digital media. I am starting to meet some twenty somethings who are die hard vinyl fans. And the MusicDirect catalog has a huge list of modern pop/rock vinyl offerings. Yeah, there's deffo a market there.

Stereophile is a bad example :D I knew it had an Analog section in their. I meant more of teh othe rmagazines that are jumping in on the vinyl. Even here, I see more posts about turntables and vinyl which is always a good thing.

I'm waiting for Jack Russell's and big horns to come back in style.

And don't forget the crank handle out the side of the cabinet.

Yeah, I heard the release date keeps getting moved back because the hdmi 1.4 doesn't support the SACD (super audio cylinder disc). Oppo also claims to be coming out with a universal player that will handle the cylinders, Acudeftechguy says the crosstalk numbers on that one are superb..........

Okay, I usually keep my big mouth shut when it comes to vinyl.

But let me get this straight.

I think most CDs sound just as good (if not better) than most vinyl.

I think most CDs cost a lot less than vinyl.

I think MP3s sound just as good as vinyl, if not better.

DVD-A, SACD, and Blu-ray sound better than vinyl.

So why would anybody want to keep vinyl?

Is it purely sentimental reasons? Like holding on to the "good old days"?:D

I think most CDs sound just as good (if not better) than most vinyl. Depends on the recording. I ahve lots of vinly that puts its CD counterpart to shame.

I think most CDs cost a lot less than vinyl. Some new vinyl yes and the CDs that are cheaper are pop music (bleh!!) or some best of CD. used vinyl..not a chance.

I think MP3s sound just as good as vinyl, if not better. Ok my friend. You keep on listening to over compressed MP3s with most of the music missing.

DVD-A, SACD, and Blu-ray sound better than vinyl. Recording dependent and nmore expensive than CD

So why would anybody want to keep vinyl?

Is it purely sentimental reasons? Like holding on to the "good old days"?:D
Playing vinyl is a hands on activity that takes TLC to extract the best sound . It has larger cover art then CD which can actually be seen. Its just way more involvong in every facet than MP3 or CDs could even hope to be .

Hobbies are great and I have no issues with everyone having different hobbies.

Just because I am not interested motorcycles doesn't mean I can't respect those who love them.

Same with vinyl. If you love vinyl, then you love vinyl. Cool.

However, assuming the same original source, from a technical point of few (96 kHz, 24-bit, etc.), I just can't see vinyl being a superior format than CDs.

Also, you just can't rip/copy vinyls like you can with CDs.:D

But it's a hobby.

I'm definitely not into vinyls. I've heard some CD songs that actually try to sound like "vinyl" and I definitely cannot understand that!:D

One example I have is the song "Sound of Silence", which was played in Watchmen BD.

I have a CD song of this, and it sounds like "vinyl".

But it doesn't even come close to sounding as good as it did in the blu-ray movie of Watchmen. I guess the sources are completely different.

Thats my point. Juast becuase a format is superior doesn't mean that the recording is good. A poor recording on a superiro medium is still a poor recording and will sound bad. Furthermore, the loudness war has resulted in less dynamic range of CDs and MP3s than what vinyl has now. *shrugs*

Thats simualted vinyl. Not real vinyl your listening to. Thats in the recording engineers perception only and no way does it reflect a good recording done on vinyl.

Well, if you did not get the point of my comment, then there is a fair chance you fall into the lower half of the worlds IQ level. Although, I think my first comment was more diplomatic.

I've got a nice Jack Russell and a horn on the original RCA Victor paper shopping bag I have framed in my listening room-it's still pretty stylish and a nice conversation piece when I have parties. However, I upgraded my turntable from a crank handle and a steel needle awhile ago; I couldn't drink and turn the crank at the same time-I kept spilling alcohol on the records and dissolving them. :)

I got it but I see it as rather pointless and just a waste of words. Its too bad becuase as antiquated as you think vinyl is, its going to outlive the CD as a medium.

Is that because vinyl polyacetate has a half life of 720 years?
