As much as we like to make fun of Monster cables, they ARE doing exactly what they said. Offering the retarded customer the same quality cables for less than $100 a meter with less marketing flash. This move, because cables are so freaking expensive at all the retailers, will actually benefit most consumers.
The other day I was in a pinch to find an HDMI cable in San Fransisco for my poor brother who hooked his system up with the free cables that came with his DVD player. I asked before I came over, "Do you have a HDMI cable for that player?" and he said he got one with his player. I have a few extra $3 monoprice HDMI cables, but I trusted him. He is a pretty smart guy. I was also so amazed that they would included one, but he stated that the player was packaged as a DVD player for HDTVs and the cable was advertised on the box. While I was thinking progress was being made by the DVD player companies, I was hugely wrong. He had composite cables hooked up and the DVD player was a plastic RCA unit with HDMI out, but no HDMI cable. I searched around SF for awhile and found a Best Buy only to find that their cheapest HDMI cable was $45. More than the DVD player itself. I was willing to drop $20, but he's still watching his beautiful HDTV from composite. So, if these cables help drop the price of monster, the off brands will have to follow suit and a price war begins that will benefit everyone. I'll look forward to it because you just can't find a cable below $30 at any brick and mortar except for frys electronics who hides them in the corner with the vacuum cleaners.
