Monitor 11 surrounds?

My friend has a pair of Paradigm monitor 11 tower speaker's and he is going to let me borrow them for a while. I am going to use them for my side surround speaker's, positioning them behind and to the left and right of my couch. In the manual for my reciever it states that surrounds should be 6 ft off of the ground. What I am wondering, since I have no place to wall mount surround speaker's, will tower's suffice for home theatre surround sound? I am going to try regardless but would like some opinions, and to know if anyone else is using a similar setup. I may just get a great deal on those monitor 11's so I hope it sounds good.

I use;

2 x Paradigm Monitor 11's Mains
2 x Paradigm Monitor 7's Surrounds
1 x Paradigm CC-370 Center
1 x Paradigm PW-2100 Sub

And it sounds great, the 7's make fine surrounds for a direct firing Speaker and sound Great with 5 Channel Stereo Music so I can only imagine the 11's would sound better if you've got the power to drive them. I love my 11's :)

I just hooked them up and it sounds really good. I watched part of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and it was pretty intense. My RX-V1400 seems to be plenty of power for the setup, especially since I am using an external amp for my fronts. I also hooked up his CC-370 instead of my 270 and that is an improvement also.

I would like to stay 4 floor standing speakers and was going throug the same line of thought. I currently have 4 CerwinVega's (at-12 fronts and d-5 surounds) My problem is my high backed recliner. It blocks the sound. It still sounds pretty good for what they are and how they are positioned. Do you have low backed furniture? If yes then I thick with the height of the 11's you'll be fine. Just don't point them right at you.

I also wonder if my high backed chair helps. Surrounds mounted 6' up and not pointed at you...what is the difference? I know the reflections will sound different but to what end...Until I try it in my room I will have to just wonder I guess...

I have been looking at the monitor line and like them pretty much and they are in my price range. They are the best sounding speaker for me in my price class that I have found local in store. Have yet to hear the 11's or the 90p's so flip flop them up front and let us now what you think!:)

I have a question, other than for music, does it make that much difference having 11's for surrounds?...my mini's seem to do the job for rears...that's the way I was directed to go from 2 different stores...rears are mainly for effect in HT, correct? Just wondering...

yeah my cousins room has the same problem, the couch blocks out the surround towers, so in his case it would be better to wall mount surrounds.

I don't have the option to wall mount my surrounds. I understand that the rear is mainly for movies but...my friend is letting me borrow them and possibly selling them for a good price. My couch is somewhat of an issue blocking the subs but the speakers are far enough away that I think it's ok. I do like to have parties and 5-channel stereo is quite nice when there are a lot of people in the room. The room is large, about 450 sq/ft with tall 18' ceilings so I figure some big speakers all around will sound good and they do, but I get the impression that the Yamaha is not quite enough to make them sound their best. I would like to hook an amp up to them, but my Adcom GFA-5200 isn't working at the moment(hoping to get that repaired if possible). The adcom is only rated at 75 or 80 WRMS per channel but it's max consumtion is 600W so I'm guessing it's beefier than the yamaha in 5 channel.

Oh yeah, I guess my main question is...as floor standing speaker's that are not the correct height for surrounds according to my Yamaha manual, how should I have these set up for accurate surround? Right now they are to the sides about 6' from my listening position and 1.5' back angled with the axis crossing about 1' in front of my head.

Maybe some day I'll get to testing the 11's with my Peavey up front but they are a little heavy to just move around without ambition to do so :)

Slacker:D:rolleyes:

18' at the catherdral peak? That is a big room.

If the 11's are a good deal I would get them and worry about powering them later. Should soung sweet in 5CH stereo.

p.s. You could always hang them from the ceiling with cables to the proper height. (hows that for WAF)
