Mirage MX 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System

I am looking for opinions on a Mirage MX 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System purchase.

I can purchase a brand new (in the box) system on e-bay from a top rated seller with free shipping for $620 which is well below the retail price of $999. There is another seller who is willing to sell the same system (new) for a counter "Make an Offer" for $500 & free shipping, but the catch is the system was purchased in a "Going Out of Business" sale out of box because the box was damaged. The seller states he tested the speakers and are in working condition.

How delicate are these speakers? Are they durable enough to trust purchasing at the lower price or should I pay the extra $120 for the surer deal? I do not have enough experience with high end speakers to know the difference.

Thanks for your replies.

I don't know these speakers that much, but laws of physics are same, tiny speakers produce tiny sound. In large space these would be wasted money.

But If I was buying them of ebay - I'd be looking at somewhere about $400 price point for new or almost new system as recent purchases show...

How big is your room, and what are you plans for these? These can't fill a big room.
It depends on your needs and expectations, if it's loud HT explosions, look elsewhere.
They would work well if you really 'must have' small speakers and like Omnipolar sound for background music, or for an office system......maybe a gaming setup.
They are better than a Bose setup and much cheaper.
Impedance falls to 3 ohms; so if you listen loud or these are for anything other than an office make sure your receiver can play into 4 ohms

Good points. Thanks for the replies.

The room size is 12 x 12. I have an older, but still very functional Sony 8 Ohm digital receiver. After researching best rated speakers, I decided on the Mirage MX5.1 because of the good quality for a smaller room. I read one CNET article that advised not to put big speakers into a smaller room.

Also, system will be used for surround sound for TV/movie watching. Moving into new home with built in surround sound wall mounts.

Check the manual for your receiver - not all receivers are 4 Ohm certified and plugging and playing moderately loud 4 Ohm on 8 Ohm only receiver can damage the latter..

Is your room open to other spaces??

Thanks BoredSysAdmin.

It is a small condo where the living room opens to a dining area - total size of 22 x 12. I will check the manual on the Sony STR-DE-545 receiver.

I am in no rush. Trying to make a well informed investment.

nanoset

I would go with nanosets at least (step up from the mx). They are not much more expensive (try vann's). I have the Omnisat v2s and really enjoy them (they are in a smaller living room.

Thanks

Thanks flippo. I will check out the nanosets. I am now posting a new thread about having to upgrade my AV receiver.
