Mini sub-maxi crap??

Hi guys ,need your help here-big time!. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place(both of them being my wife-she moves that fast!....:D )
I am trying desperately to put together a surround system to go with my new plasma HD tv-but anything which makes a noise or is bigger than a match-box,or has wires attached,is the cause of instant ear-bleeding volume from the good lady herself:eek: (how is it that the fair sex hate noise, yet make so much? ).
Anyhow,I have solved one part of the prob-I have persuaded her that the Yamaha YST 1000 sound projector would be the new love of her life-(1 box,1 wire-best I could do in the circs:D ).
The thing I need now is a reasonable sub--she who must be obeyed would prefer one which is small enough to sit in your palm,is TOTALLY silent, and comes as a free gift:D :D .
As a realist,I have come as close to her wishes as poss, and am looking at the B&W AS2(the little sub that comes with the MT 20 surround package)
Here in the U.K,this sub on its own costs about £320 (U.K pounds,=about $520 U.S). It has a 150w amp and a 10" cone,is about 12"square and 15"back to front .I know it is small, but then so is my room. Sadly,my wife is not....:D .
Sooooo-is this little box half decent-good enough to match the projector??
(I assume it must be WAY better than the even smaller and cheaper Yamaha YST FSW100 sub that is supposed to match the projector????).
Please help a down-trodden soul :D to get the best he can from a tricky situation-will truly appreciate any help you guys with the know-how can give.
Cheers friends,Dave G.

You should look at the Velodyne SPL series. Very nice, small subs.

Hi Sheep, thank you so much for your instant reply. I know what you are saying about the Velodynes-truly super subs, but sadly way beyond my budget.
What I am trying to do(as ever)is get the max bang for my buck,at a price that will not cause my instant death:D .
Cheers mate,Dave G.

Hi again Sheep-my budget is about £300 UK..I think that would be about $600 Canadian??.
The MiniVee is not one I am familiar with-probably not available here in the UK??
Do you know anything about the B&W sub (AS2) that I mentioned-seems to be fairly well thought of over here?

No, I haven't heard any B&W speakers.

The MiniVee is a cheap SPL series sub. Its basically a SPLII without any finish options. About 899 here.

That sure looks a belting sub for its tiny size-1000w   -still,it is a bit beyond my budget, even if it were available here.(do not think it is)
The one I was looking at has a larger cone/driver,but I would assume could not match the quality of bass that this model presumably has???.
Cheers,Dave.

I have heard it, and it is very nice. It doesn't have the best low-end, but the bass is nice. Great music subwoofer. I really don't know what is available in Europe, so I don't know which ones to recommend.

Sure does sound good-hell of a lot better than the Yamaha sound projector I want to match a sub with-though in all fairness the Yammy is intended purely for viewing movies.
Many thanks Sheep-you are a star.

Any brits/others who can put me right on this one??? :D

DIY Option?

This is just a suggestion, but there are speaker places that sell DIY kits where literally everything is provided. You don't even need to do any cutting, just simple assembly. You get a powerful, great-looking sub that is a good size and price. I'll send you a PM with some info. :D

Small budget sub

The HSU STF-1 or Onix X-sub are both small, musical 8" subwoofers. The real wood and $200 US price on the Onix might help it pass the WAF. They are sold through av123.com in the US but also have an Onix England distributor. Not sure about a HSU distributor over there, but the US price is $300.

I would not recommend any of the Yamaha subwoofers.

How about the Dominator D8, D10 or D12? Not sure if you can get them where you are or how much they would be.

They're still available in the US from onecall.com at very good discontinuation prices ($449, $499 and $549, respectively).

I would second the Onix x-sub suggestion. Also, at your budget you could probably get the ulw-10 (found here) which is a little bigger but definitely great bang for the buck (won best budget sub of the year from Audioholics, check it out here).

I have the Mirage Omni S8 8" sub. It's nice little (emphasis on the little) sub that I got on sale at Amazon for only $200 shipped a month ago...the platinum color is quite sharp and blends well with the rest of my system. I lot of oomph for an 8 incher. Just my $.02:)
