Gene, I really don't understand the point of publishing reviews by this author. There's no detail, no analysis of the recording quality, no real opinion about the music, etc. It's just one guy sitting down for 5 minutes to write a short bit about his favorite albums. Hell, if you wanted that, I could give you pages upon pages about Steely Dan. If you're going to publish music reviews, I'd prefer if they were more like Mr. Andry's reviews, very detailed with a decent analysis of the content.

Short version: I do not believe reviews by Mr. Zeff live up to the standards set by other reviews here at Audioholics. I am also willing to back up my above claims and write a review of an album if you request.

Jeff is a bit short worded but I enjoy his perspective on music, especially the little trivial facts. I will see if we can get him to up the content portion a bit in future reviews.

Feel free to submit me your reviews for Steely Dan, but be warned once you publish for us, the critics eyes will be upon you

I'm a Mike Stern fan, but why is he reviewing a Mike Stern album from '86?

Author's rebuttal...

First, I'd like to say that open and honest discussion is what makes forums like this great (and is generally welcome). However, if you had THAT big a problem with my review, you could have emailed me (or Gene) privately and voiced your concern. Suffice to say that the positive comments sent to me (privately) far outweigh the negatives, and the hour or so I spend writing each review (not to mention a life-time of listening experiences) is as much a labor of love as it is for the money (let's just say its less than I make an hour--every hour--at my day job). As for the "why are you reviewing OLD CD's question", there are several answers:

1) Sharing my favorites (more below)
2) Building an interest in the artists themselves, as is definitely the case for groups like Mike Stern and the Yellowjackets (believe me, I fully intend to review later releases for both of these artists)
3) As the music business has become more "dysfunctional" (trust me, I have very close friends in the business), the sad fact is that there just aren't enough (new) jazz CD releases widely available to share on a monthly or bi-weekly basis.

Obviously, once I get through my "all-time favorites" (which is soon), there will be nothing left to do but (mostly) new releases. I appreciate Gene's effort to remain neutral in this case, and I will continue to provide reviews as long as he wants to post them; it's worth noting that the impetus to start writing these reviews was based on Gene's encouragement to share some of MY favorite (mostly jazz) CD's with those looking for the same, since that seemed to be an area lacking on the website.

Keep those cards and letters coming...

Gene:

I might take you up on that offer. I need a break from all the calculus once in awhile.

Mr. Zeff:

I apologize for being so blunt. I was "a-hole mode" earlier so my feelings were amplified. Your review was not bad, but I do feel that you could sit down and be more long-winded. I just read the review and wonder, "Hmm...isn't there more?" Next time I have a beef, I'll be sure to e-mail you directly, as posting such a comment here was quite rude. I try to be tactful (though I obviously fail at times) and treat people as I would like to be treated. Once again, my apologies to you, sir.

Edit: Mr Zeff, your Aja review is more of what I'd personally like to see.
