LOTR is giving you tons of great advice and options. To further encourage you I would like to mention that I just bought a full set of surrounds myself from a retail chain (Best Buy).

The original cost of all parts together (including cable and extended warranties) was ~$3300. I walked out of the store with all of it at $1900. So if the economy is hurting as much there as over here, then your local stores are willing to deal just to get customers and money in their door.

My personal reason for getting the speakers that I did, was that I liked the sound of them (I spent 12+ hours listening to different speakers all around my city and these ones were at the top of what I could find), they came in the color I wanted, and they were easily mountable in any area I would want to put them in.

Just for your reference, here is what I walked out with (May be over your budget):

http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=5028057 Receiver
http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/xb-10.aspx 2 Pair (4 total)
http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/xl-23.aspx Center Channel
http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/synergy-sub-12.aspx Sub

The whole moral of this post, you may be able to get a great deal if you try to purchase everything together through a local retailer.

Nice soundsytem i looked it up with the prices here (the Netherlands)
XB-10 €239 x 4 = €956
XL-23 = €439
Sub-12 = €499
Totaal = €1894,- ($2646)

And thats is without a receiver hehe yeh think you are right that this is a lil bit over mine budget :) Bargain about the price is something for later concern (but i will surely do especially with the economic crisis hehe) but first i have to find something i like, but i'm getting there:)

Found a place close to me that is made only for listening to soundsystems. They also had Energy so i mailed them today if i can listen to Energy Type Classic 5.1.

Is it true that when you have a 7.1 setup that you cant have your couch against the wall, cause the rear boxes have to be behind the couch? (see the picture)

Now, you're talking! This is the best that you can do Gamblet. Perfect! :)

And the Energy Take 5 system too! Way to go! :)

Bring your favorite CDs with you. And ask them to put a blu-ray too. And take your time, and listen for many systems as you can.

But I tell you what, maybe that Energy system is only $200 (without the sub) here in the USA, but it is a very nice sounding system according to many pros. And you have to get a deal too, that's part of audio bargaining for a fair price. It's good for you and it's good for them too, because they gain your business, and that, is invaluable. Plus you gain their service and tips. And next time you go back, you look for deals on floorstand speakers, you keep in touch with them and their sales.

I wish you good luck, and don't forget to always take your time when shopping for speakers and to listen to as many as you can. ;)

Yes it's true. A couch against the back wall is a no no.

Some people don't have the choice, but there are some ways to put your surrounds higher on the walls.

But the very best is to move your couch further into the room, if you can.
That graph that you show is very right, that's the best way.
A very good rule of thumb is to put your couch (main seat) at 2/3 distance from the front wall, and 1/3 from the rear wall.

Well thanks u for all the advice in special LOTR aka Bob i have purchase the Onkyo SR-705. Seems like waiting will be rewarded just saw a good offer last week (not many stores do sell this type in the Netherlands).

Soo now i got mine receiver hehee but i wanna hear some good sound out of it. :D Gonna listen to the Energy Take Classic 5.1 this week. Also wanted to listen to the Jamo A405 HCS5 but that seems not possible.. Well hope the Energy Take is good enough. If anyone else have some suggestions about a surround speaker set (price +/- 800) then please let me know.

Smart move.

Well Congratulations Gamblet on your new baby toy, the 705. :)

Now, for speakers; just take your time and listen to as much systems you can. Because this part, only you, can really decide. It's the most important part of the puzzle. It is after all your own set of ears and your own personal room!

And when you are ready and you feel that you experienced the best sound so far, keep listening to more systems to really make sure. That "high end" Energy speaker's system (if you can afford it in your area) might just be your ticket to Audio Nirvana!
And then buy the speaker's system and try it in your own home with your new receiver, to make sure that it is the sound that you can live very happily ever and after. :)

Man, you'll be so happy with that Audyssey MultEQ XT, it will do you great in your room. And it has all the power you really need with that THX Select2 certification. This 705 is very something!, trust me. You'll be experiencing multiple audio orgasm. :D

Again, take your time and keep in touch.

Here we are again lots of things happend last week. They delivered mine onyo SR-705 for a nice price however it has been used.... Communication with the shop are running slow.

He cant sell me the SR-705 for less but he is willing to give mine moneyback. Yesterday he called me and said he could make me a intresting deal for the SR-706 if i'm intrested.

So far i can see the SR-706 has some improvements (better upscalling and 1hdmi more). He will let me know for what price he can sell the SR-706 if its not much more then i will accept it.

Better news i got for the Energy Take Classic 5.1 talked to a store were they said a new shippment is comming and they gonna sell it for €200 euro less. So next week i will contact him to make the deal:D

Look who's back! ;)

Now, listen to me very carefully. I've been following you around (yes, it's my job to take care of people just like you ;) ), and this is what I recommend you to do: keep the 705, but ask your dealer to give you an extra year of warranty, if he can. If not, keep the 705, because it is a better receiver than the 706. The 706 only have Audyssey MultEQ (not XT), which is a big downgrade. Also the 706 HDMI video clips below white and above black (even in pass through mode!), which the 705 does not.
Trust me, I know what I'm talking about, the 705 is the one to get.
Forget about that little tiny scatch line on top, don't be a sissy, and grow up like a real man. ;)

That's all what I have to say, don't disappoint me now, after all the time I give you personally. And you don't have to ask the same questions at AVS, ;) while I'm here, and that I already gave you the best answers.

I now don't want to talk anymore about your receiver, period! You already have the 705, which you already know that it is the best, and now you want to exchange it already for an inferior one! This is what I call, "screw up big time" and "don't know how to get a grip with his life".
You are a very hard ball to deal with!

I'm glad to hear about the good discount you'll get on the Energy Take Classic 5.1 speaker's set.
Here's my final suggestion: if you get that speaker set from the same dealer than your receiver (you better keep the 705 again for the god dam last time), then ask him for an additional discount on the Energy set, because you decide to keep the 705 with these BIG, HUGE scratches all over the top and the back. :D You know what I mean...

Heya Bob,

Was counting on your reply :D It suprised me when you said the 705 is the better receiver over the 706. Doesnt sound logical to a audio rookie like me cause the 706 is latest version of that type. Have to take you on your worth on this one.;) Not the scratch i worry about but the idee its used and i dont know by who and for how long. Got no warranty from Onkyo on it only from a store that not exactly in the neighbourhood. As they sell used products for new then i wondering how trustworthy they are. So there the deal he made me to give me a brand new SR706 (with 2 year waranty from Onkyo) didnt sound that bad. But now the though the 706 has video issues worries me :(

That's all what I have to say, don't disappoint me now, after all the time I give you personally. And you don't have to ask the same questions at AVS, ;) while I'm here, and that I already gave you the best answers.
For starters mine latest post was more like a update how things went. However im suprised that the SR706 is less. Now knowing that i probarly will made a other decision.

I appreciated your input allot and it often was a big help, but whats wrong to ask arround abit. No offence i'm more convinced when ten people tell me the same then one.

Mayby we can talk about mine tv a lil bit then:D I was wondering what cable(s) i need for TV (out) --> receiver (in). Got the Sony 37W5500 it got 4 HMDI (1.3), optical and coax. I think that a HDMI(1.3) cable from tv to receiver HDMI in will work for sound and vid, but not sure cause i havent read in the tv manual about HDMI out (or are those hdmi in aswell out?).

I'm glad to hear about the good discount you'll get on the Energy Take Classic 5.1 speaker's set.

Yeh isnt that great who said its not worth waiting:D Unfortunatly im getting the speakers from a other store so it wont help me with bargaing but i'm happy if i can get it for €499. Will wait till they contact me about the SR705, i aspect they try to sell it for €100 more and thats a no deal for me. So i probarly will keep the SR705 and asked again for abit discount. Ooh yeh and like your idee to get some more year warranty!!

Have a great weekend !

Cheers Gamblet

No more jokes, be a wise as* now.

Actually, I'm glad that you check around, like AVS, because it just confirmed what I was saying. And the smart fellows over there, they told you the same thing than I did, the 705 is the better one. You have been told over and over by different people, including myself, and you still doubt it!

It is not the most recent products that are the best, it's the ones that were built in a strong economy. And the 705 fits the bill, as my 805 too.

And if you still don't believe me that the 705 is the better value of the two between it and the 706 (at the same price), ask other members right here that are in the know. You have already a full warranty with the 705, so what's your problem? If the store give you a warranty on it, then it's good, if you have any trouble, they'll give you a brand new 706 for it. But, it's worth keeping the 705 for now, as this is the better one, period.
And yes, the 706 has video issues, enough to stay away from it and go with the 705, period.
Hey, be my guess, and buy the one that will give you the most trouble and that you will regret buying for the rest of your life, go ahead and shoot yourself in the back and buy the 706.

This is it, I got enough of your undecided and pathetic questions turning in circle. You are a real case of frootloop.

And no, thank you, no talk about TV, read your god dam manual and get a life.
Are you that stupid or what?

And get those Energy speakers (you got a reasonable deal now), so you can start hooking up things together and get a life, of course after you read all your manuals. :D

Ok, you got my draft now, I hope? :D

Whats your problem dude got some aditute problem cause spending to much time on the forum while you should probarly get some rest!?!?

If you got your facts straight you would see i was asking here and on the avs-forum about the SR-607 versus the SR-705. I never talked about the SR-706 before!!!!!! And NO i dont question if the 705 is better then the 607. Why do you think i boughed the 705 at the first place cause off the advice of people like yourself...

You making a issue about mine latest post cause i said the dealer offered me the 706 instead of the 705. Whats pathetic about that its even isnt a question FFS...........

I suggest to take rest Bob before you post anythings else here...

So long,

All right, I was absolutely not serious. I was mainly teasing you with my comments. The only serious parts are the ones about the products themselves. And everything about you was totally humoristic.
Why? You did not see that? I thought that I put enough smilies to make that very clear.

I'm absolutely fresh and well rested (I just slept over 12 hours!). :D

And you did mentioned the 706 a few times. ;)
And I'm not talking about any other place than right here.

"Dude", I love that, one of my favorite movie: "The Big Lebowski", cool.

Ok, I'm sorry if you could not see my over-exaggerated sense of humor.

Now, I would like another member to chime in, and tell you why the 705 is a better buy than the 706.

I'll be more serious, I promess.
I know that you're a good person, I just thought that you can take my post with a good laugh, because after all, that was my main intention, mixing true recommendations with a good laugh on top of it. I was purely human in the truer sense of it; happyness all around, with your ears, your heart and your soul.

Frankly,

Bob

Hey buddy, you got good news for us, as I can see.

Hi Gamblet,

Glad to see you in your usual good mood.
By the way, frootloop is my favorite cereal. :)
And like I said on my last post, I was already on these new pills when I write that post that you so lovely compliment me about.

Anyway, this is great news indeed, about the Energy speaker set, great price too. I'm happy for you. Things are rolling just fine, when you take time on your side.

Now, for your loudspeaker cables, your first link is inoperative! Oups! It's working now!
But I'm sure they are just fine. Just try to stay with 14awg, with good purity copper of 6N or so (99.9999% copper). If it doesn't say, that's OK. Copper for sure though.
* Hard to tell from that link what it is exactly in American language. But it is copper for sure (it cannot be brass, duh). Make sure it's not 18awg (gauge). At the very minimum, 16awg, but 14awg will be preferable. I recommend 14awg.
And if your Energy speakers accept banana plugs, you'll need a bunch of these too, at both ends of your speaker cables. You can find some cheap ones, gold plated and easy to install. I like the ones that have two small screws that you just tighten up over the speaker cable, quick and do the trick. And just a couple dollars a pair.
Check with your dealer(s), if they can give you a good deal on these, if they do carry them (they might very well do). Or just check online.

And for your sub interconnect, it is excellent. The price is very reasonable too. Just make sure that is long enough (2.5 meters should be fine).
* But it does look like a Digital coaxial cable (with 75 ohms impedance). That should do though. Unless another member like to object...
You just need an audio analog cable with double shielding (50 ohms impedance). Again with 6N purity copper content.
Gold plated RCA male jacks are perfect though. And not plastic ends, but full brass or metal gold plated phono plugs.

All right for now, keep in touch, just the way you already do. ;)

I use 16 gauge that I bought form my local hardware store. It works just fine. Unless you need to do a run through the attic or have a massive living room.
