MDR-7506 jack replacement?

I bought SONY MDR-7506 headphones last year, which was a great purchase until a couple of months ago. I was on a plane in an isle seat and I had to get up to let the lurp next to me get out. I love using my own headphones for the inflight movies. Those personal entertainment screens are the only saving grace on a 9-hour flight. Except this time I snapped the end of my headphone jack.

The brilliant folks at SONY parts depot have so far only wasted my time. I ended up with the wrong part, which I blame on their website for not having pictures of the parts they sell. How was I supposed to know what PLUG, ADAPTORMINI-PHONO STEREO, 150658911 was? Overall, I am not impressed with SONY's customer service. I returned it and asked for help and they suggested that I buy the same wrong part again. I wonder how much they get paid to make stupid suggestions like that.

My question remains. See attached pic to be sure of what I need. Does anyone know where I can buy the part I need or more importanly what the part number is if I have to order it? I am in Iraq, but I think I have the tools available that I need to do the fix. Thanks in advance for the help.

If you have not already, look for and contact the number to Sony Professional/Broadcast division warranty/repair. The MDR-7506 is distributed by the Professional division. I generally use a Nuetrik replacement plug, which are generally very good, but the Sony 1/8" plugs as used on the MDR-V6/MDR-7506/MDR-CD3000[all use the same plug but with different colors/finishes] are of the highest percieved quality/build I have ever seen.

I just got another reply from SONY. They said the same thing:

Thank you for contacting Sony Direct Accessories and Parts Center (DAPC USA).

I believe your model number should be MDR7506. I do not show MDRV7506 as a correct model number. The MDR7506 headphones are handled by our business and professional department 1-800-538-7550. We do sell some parts for it through our website though. I have looked at the service manual for the MDR7506 headphones. These are the part numbers listed for this model. and 158079211 is unfortunately no longer available. You might call the business and professional department to see if they have another part you can use.

Thank you for you interest in Sony.

Let me take a moment to rant about the ineptitude of some of the answer-poeple at SONY. Keep in mind that I have to call from IRAQ, which never makes for good sound quality. A call has to travel 8,000 miles through a maze of encrypting and decrypting switches and what-not. The delay is almost comical, except that it's a pain in the butt. If you happen to get one of those poeple on the phone get your point across fast because they are transfer happy. I literally went full circle calling from one office to the next before I ended up where I started. One office insisted that I had to buy a new set. While I was on hold at one point I checked their website for availability, but I wanted to be sure I wasn't going to order the wrong part again. I actually had to convince them that they in fact had the part that I needed only to find out that I have to wait four weeks for them to get it from Japan. Way to go, SONY.

And then they sent the wrong part --- AGAIN  I give up on Sony service. Three months later I have only spent time and money shipping the wrong parts.

Thread revival. I have these headphones and did the exact same thing! I still have the plug, but I'm not sure if I can even reuse it since it doesn't have any wire on it anymore.

Anyone know if I can use an aftermarket plug? On the wire there's a gree, red and copper cable.

Thank you!

Yes just buy a stereo mini jack plug at Radio Shack ans solder it on.

I'll try that out. Is the red/green/copper wire pretty standard?

Sorry for the tardy reply, but I'm visiting England and arrived yesterday.

The green will be left and should be soldered to the tip connector. The red will be right and should be soldered to the ring. The shield should be soldered to the sleeve.

Two things...

(1) You won't find a replacement plug as high quality as the Sony one. I've looked and have not yet found an after market one it's equal. Sometimes someone will sell replacement MDR-7506 OEM cables w/plug included for about $10-$13 each on eBay.

(2) The wire used in this headphone cable has a thick coating on all of the strands. At least, this is true for the 3 sets I have had to re-install plugs on( I was shortening the cables and removing the annoying spring coil attribute). The coating is clear. At first, it may seem like it won't solder due to this coating. Use a medium to medium high temperature and burn the coating off before soldering and it will then solder up fine.

Thank you, gentlemen. I'll keep my eye on eBay for awhile to see if I can't score another.

I still have the plug actually, but there's no cable coming off it. Think I could peel back the thick outside and solder on the original?

The plug comes apart. It has a small dab of heat glue in the threads, and that is why it does not seem to twist open like most plugs. You have to put it in a vice and heat it carefully up a bit (not too hot) to soften the glue and use some pliers to carefully(without scratching the finish) unscrew the case. Once you get it open you can clean the threads off and it won't be a problem in the future. The solder tabs are VERY small and you should get some practice in on soldering some equivalent small parts before trying to do it on here - or you may melt parts and destroy it.

Thank you, Chris. It looked like it came apart, but I couldn't figure out how/where.

I'll report back with results!
