maybe a silly question

I have to say I was wrong in my last post there. Dualdiscs can be played through 5.1 analog. However, the sound was still better in DD to me.

With Teeth

Does the F85 even do DVD-A? I also had an F-87, and it sounded great with DVD-A. I'm not sure what you are listening to, the DVD-A track on With Teeth is a noticable improvement over the DD track. If your player supports DVD-A, you have to go into the setup menu and tell it to select the DVD-A track, not the DVD-V track. If the player defaults to DVD-V, you will always get the DD track.

Dual Disc will most certainly not kill DVD-A or SACD, since the discs are not compatible with all players. It's a cool concept, but I don't think it will stick any better than DVD-A or SACD have.

Hey Johnny, I've got the Panasonic F65, basically the F85 without the multichannel analogue outs that I knew I'd never use. Sounds great, picture looks great, AH recommended it in the $3K Recommended System a while back, which is why I bought it. Cheap too!

I'm waiting to see how the HD wars pan out or find a 5900 or 3910 sitting on a store shelf far too long.

Yes the F 85 plays DVD A. I have the multi channel connectors hooked up. I think it just depends on some discs what sounds better. I am also in a small room so maybe that makes a difference. It is a fine player and just because it's a Panny doesn't mean it's crap. Panasonic makes fine equipment. I challenge anyone to say there is a better TV out there than the new Panasonic Viera. It's my next purchase.

I have to disagree with a previous thread. I was told today by the biggest CD/DVD store in town ( A&B sound) , that almost all new titles will be coming out in Dual disc. I am sorry to say, this will kill DVD A and SACD. It is unfortunate but to most people, this will be good enough. I prefer the High rez DVD A (my player doesn't play SACD) to Dualdisc. No doubt about it. But there are NO new titles coming out. Dualdisc has everything. mark my words. And no, more people can play these than DVD A or SACD. Dualdiscs have some problems in car stereos. Some car stereos. DVD A and SACD doon't play in ANY car CD player. The record companies are counting on Dualdisc to save the recording industry. By giving us "more for our money" we will buy again instead of downloading. And you know what? I am buying more. I love the bonus stuff. The making ofs, the 5.1 mixes, the bonus unplugged stuff, the videos. Give me more for my money! I am all over it!

And yes...I am waiting to get my new big screen and waiting to see what format catches on in the High def/Blu ray battle before I buy my new Denon DVD player.

Well, hate to dispell that, but my With Teeth was ruined by my home CD player the first time I dropped it in. Fortunately, BB was nice enough to replace it, and as a result of that, I doubt I will buy any more if I can avoid it - couldn't avoid it for With Teeth, had to have the DVD-A since there was no SACD version released.

DVD A and SACD doon't play in ANY car CD player.
Interesting. There are car DVD-A capable players on the market already, have been for at least a year, though the early ones weren't cheap. The CD layer of Hybrid SACDs will play in ANY CD/DVD player, though that is the CD layer, not the SACD layer.

Dualdiscs also weigh more, and some have said this may contribute to premature motor failures. Not sure if that one has merrit or not, but it's a possibility.

ahhh jgarcia. That's where you made the mistake...you played the "DVD" side in a CD player. It is clearly maked "DVD" on that side. You should have played the CD side. But maybe Dualdiscs are for DVD players in general as most of us use DVD players to play music now over a CD player??? People who have the issues seem to be playing a Dualdisc in a CD player.

I've got to pipe in and make it a Canadian trifecta. I have a Panasonic DVD player as well that I just love. It is I belive the F87, the 5 disc changer version of the F85. I was planning on just using this player for 2 or 3 mo uunitil I could afford a good player, but guess what, I bought the good player already and it can play 5 discs. I will replace it one day for a player with bass management, but since I only own one DVDA it's not on my list of "to do's" any time soon. Panasonic puts out a heck of a DVD player at a competitive prive IMO.

Nope. It wouldn't have mattered which side was in there, the opposite side would have been scratched. I know how to read, and put the correct side down. I know this, because it was the DVD side (top) that got damaged by the pickup mechanism, which has very little clearance, and would not clear the additional thickness of the DD.

How is a dualdisc for a DVD player? Did you not just say in one of your previous posts that the whole point was that it could be used in any CD player, right? Well, if they are intended for DVD players...that makes it a DVD-A again. That was the one drawback of DVD-A, they would not play in CD players, which is why I prefer the SACD format.

The only audio I use my DVD player for are DVD-As and music DVDs. If you want great redbook CD playback, a quality CD player is the way to go.

The F87 is a fine player. I have no complaints about it, except that it's build quality isn't that spectacular, but hey, it was only $120.

Actually, the F87 replaced the F85. They are both 5 disc players. And yes, they are very good players for the price.

One side of the Dualdisc is for CD.

One side of the Dualdisc is for DVD. You must play the Dualdisc in a DVD player to get the 5.1 mix.

Sorry, didn't mean to insult you. I know you can read.

At least the CD side plays in all CD players (or so I thought). DVD A and SACD require the purchase of a DVD player that is capable of playing them and the extra cost of 3 high quality patch cords. Dualdisc will play in more people's equipment and still give better quality sound than a regular CD.
