So I can get my hands on a REFURBISHED Marantz SR5008 for $300.. My other option is a new Onkyo TX-SR646. Suggestions? The thing that scares me with the Marantz is I've seen a few Amazon reviews where talk about input lag, which I don't want for PS4..

Does the Marantz NOT have some kind of direct video mode? Input lag even when no video processing is happening?

Yeah, if the Marantz truly has input lag......then it would be a disaster for online gaming. But, I say that is a BIG IF.

You might be able to get around that with 1 connection to the TV for vid and 2nd connection to AVR for audio.

The Onkyo tends to run hot, I tend to steer clear of Onkyo, but it does offer a lot for the $.

I'm just going off of what a few people said on the Amazon reviews.. This one in particular.

"1. Video Lag. When you pass your HDMI cable through the receiver into your TV, the receiver likes to "take over" the signal by imprinting things like their on-screen settings and volume control. This is actually an awesome feature for most users because you can see all of the receiver controls right on your screen. Unfortunately, the cost for this feature is additional video processing that happens within the receiver, meaning, there's a slight lag introduced in your video signal. I ran some tests and the delay is about 50 milliseconds when the on-screen controls are enabled. To combat this issue, Marantz has an "audio sync" feature which delays the audio to sync with the delayed video signal. So, for most users the video lag introduced by the on-screen settings will not be an issue. If, however, you want to play twitch-reflex video games (e.g., Rock Band, Call of Duty, etc.), your gaming performance will suffer as a result of this lag. In Rock Band, for example, there is a very noticeable delay between singing into the mic and then hearing the actual sound through your speakers. Marantz does allow you to disable the on-screen controls so that you can directly pass the video signal through (thus, eliminating the delay); however, you lose the cool on-screen controls and are required to use Marantz' tiny LCD to read the volume and input values."

Well, if you believe that review, then at least he gives you the workaround---turn off the on screen controls while you are playing video games!

Turn it back on if you want it when not playing games, or simply switched off permanently and deal with it.

Yeah, 50 milliseconds of lag will get you killed on COD or GOW every time!

If we are simply comparing AVRs and not discussing video lag, then I would personally choose Marantz over Onkyo, and never look back. If video lag is your first concern, then the Onkyo might be a better choice.

By the same token, be sure that your TV isn't adding lag by doing some vid processing on its own.

I would go with Marantz. And like discussed already you can use direct video mode to avoid that delay if there is any.
