Marantz 2270 vs. Pioneer SX1000TW

Hi Everyone,

I just received a Marantz 2270 that I purchased from a used audio dealer. The receiver it replaced is a 1970 Pioneer SX1000TW. When I hooked up the Marantz I noticed that, although it sounds great, it lacks the high treble that the Pioneer produced.

I am a novice with these issues, but when comparing the specs of the 2 receivers the Marantz is clearly superior in all areas. The Marantz was cleaned and old bulbs replaced prior to purchase from the dealer but as far as I am aware that was it.

Any ideas on this? Is it possible that the Pioneer (at 1/5th retail price of the Marantz, early 70s prices) just has a more powerful top end, or is there possibly an internal part in the Marantz that may be degraded.

The Marantz does sound outstanding. Clear detail, lovely smoothness... I am using a pair of Polk Audio RTi6 s for speakers.

Thanks!

Is the cup half full or half empty?

Interesting. I have a 2270 and a SX-1000TD and don't notice any glaring differences.

While you may notice a difference, ask yourself if it's not that the Marantz is more full and flat while the Pioneer lacks a solid bottom end, which puts the emphasis on the highs.

Give it time. You might even prefer the thin sound of the Pioneer which you've grown used to and, after all these years, just might need some new caps in the PS.

Oh, the 2270 sold for around $600 NIB in the early 70's.

Are you saying the Pioneer sold for $120? I don't think so.

Those legendary Marantz and Pioneer receivers bring in more now than they did new. I can't believe how much people will pay for them sometimes, it's unreal.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies.

I think you are right about giving the Marantz a little more time. It seems to take a little while to notice the subtle differences. The Marantz has outstanding stereo separation and balance. I think the initial difference I noticed was quantity of high treble from the Pioneer vs. quality from the Marantz.

BTW, I have all the original materials that came with the Pioneer receiver and C99 speakers, including the original packaging, spare speaker clips, fuses, cabinet wax, buffing cloth, warranty cards, receipts and product brochures from the retailer. In the 1970 Pioneer product catalog the SX1000TW retailed for $178.00 and the Pioneer C99 speakers listed for $99.00. The model that you have may have cost more.

Thanks again for the information. I am relatively inexperienced with high end products like the Marantz. I appreciate any info I can get.
