I think you are right about giving the Marantz a little more time. It seems to take a little while to notice the subtle differences. The Marantz has outstanding stereo separation and balance. I think the initial difference I noticed was quantity of high treble from the Pioneer vs. quality from the Marantz.
BTW, I have all the original materials that came with the Pioneer receiver and C99 speakers, including the original packaging, spare speaker clips, fuses, cabinet wax, buffing cloth, warranty cards, receipts and product brochures from the retailer. In the 1970 Pioneer product catalog the SX1000TW retailed for $178.00 and the Pioneer C99 speakers listed for $99.00. The model that you have may have cost more.
