Man Bites Dog Continued - Denon 3806 Is Here

As some of you know I purchased Denon 3806 yesterday to see what kind of improvement a quality receiver my provide. I needed a new receiver any way since my Onkyo 595 died and I decided to go a bit upscale with the replacement. It's going to sit in the box for a week or so since my sound system is unplugged and scattered all over the place while the walls get painted.

Over at the AVS Forum in the 3806 thread there is much complaining and gnashing of teeth about the HDMI. Since my Sony Plasma does not support HDMI that is a moot point Right?. No big deal if so since the Sony has DVI and component inputs and that is just fine by me. I need only two inputs, one for the digital cable box and one for the DVD player. Audio is handled by optical for both.

The other big complaint is the OSD. My questions are (1) How is the OSD connected from the receiver and work with the plasma if there is no HDMI. (2) How big a deal is OSD anyway. Is it more than a duplication of what's on the 3806 display? I know I could open the box and try to figure some of this out from the manual (more wailing and gnashing of teeth about the manual ) but the voice of experience would be appreciated given the quality (or lack there of) of the aforementioned manual. Thanks guys.

The way I understand the HDMI issue is getting the signal from the cable company and be recognized by the TV. You can always go direct to the TV, bypassing the receiver. In either case, it is a problem at the cable company's box not properly programmed to pass the codes even through a receiver.

OSD should go through all video connections. OSD is used to set the receiver up and configure it as not everything may be displayed on the receiver. You can always try to use the receiver display first and then you can always use a video cable to the TV and see.

You can use any S-Video or Composite video (RCA plug) for the OSD.

As far as needing the OSD beyond the speaker/eq set up, you really don't, but for doing the autoeq set up and everything, I would definately hook up your display to the 3806 somehow (component video is how I'm doing mine as I don't have HDMI in's on my monitor either). Once you play around with all the settings and get it like you want, the need to use the OSD regularly just isn't there.

Remote ? for all 3806 users...
When you use the remote for the 3806, it lights up and on mine, there's a slight hum/noise if you hold it near your ear while it's illuminated. Does yours do that too? Just want to make sure I don't have a bum remote. You don't hear it unless you hold the remote near your ear. Odd question, but just had to ask.
