Magnetic shielding or not

If given a choice which way would you go? Does magnetic shielding do anything to make the speaker sound different compared to the same unshielded model?

I found a threat that mentions how magnetic sheilding is done: bucking magnets or metal caps over the magnet. Correct?

How do these things affect performance? The centre channel is shielded. The fronts have the option. The surrounds only come unshielded. Makes sense to me. Since you never know how you might place the speakers I am thinking of getting the fronts shielded.

Do I worry to much? Maybe. Just asking. :D

Most modern speakers are sheilded, Bucking magnets are pretty common on woofers and midrange and most tweeters have a metal cover around the back. Ive never destroyed one to see if it had bucking magnets as well.

Keep in mind though that you dont need sheilding for modern front or rear projection, or plasma or LCD, Only works with CRT.

I dont know for sure if it affects the sonic performance of speakers though.

Interesting point to ponder.

Since I can't think of any speaker where one is given the choice of shielded or non-shielded for a particular model, I guess we'll never know.

I seem to remember that Paradigm's monitor series gives you the option of sheilding as long as the are black.

STRONGBADF1 is correct. Paradigm does offer the choice on their studio 100 towers if you buy black. The CC-570 comes shielded in all colour finishes. The surrounds ADP-470's come without.

The Paradigm atoms could also be bought either way. Not sure if this was dependent on the finish though.

I guess they would not compromise a speaker by adding shielding. I was just curious.

I think I will give the 100 and CC-570 a try. And I might as well get the shielded version. Who knows where those speakers might end up.

Thanks for the feedback.

What did Paradigm say when you asked them this question?

I have not asked yet. I plan to check the speakers out in a week or so. I will ask then. All I know is there is an extra cost to get the shielded model.
