Magnetic shielding or lack of it.

Would anyone here be concern if big tower speakers had no magnetic shielding and you were spending a lot of time in close proximity lets say within 1 meter of them?

I can say that I wouldn't be worried, but I could just be uneducated. I did it all of the time in college.

Heck, people buy magnetic bracelets because they think it'll make them more healthy. ;)

I’m trying to decide on speakers (for a month now!) and one of my main choices doesn’t have shielding. Because of that I was leaning towards another brand. However, if enough people say don’t worry about it then I’m willing to become an experiment. Let you know if something grows on me that shouldn’t. hehehe

Will you be using the speakers right next to a CRT television? If so, that's another consideration.

No, I'm not going to be using close to CRT. I guess I would have to keep my CD's a bit away from the speakers.

My tapes are in storage. :) As for the hard drives those would be about 1.5 meter away from the speakers. Hopefully that would be enough?

I'm sure that specifics are detailed on the internet, but I think that's just fine. My hard drives are closer than that to an unshielded B&W subwoofer (with a substantial magnet on the woofer), and I haven't had any problems.

Cool, in that case it should be ok. The speakers that I’m thinking about are B&W too, the 683. Thanks for your help!

well. the magnets could pull all of the iron in your body, over to one side. then you may end up walking tilted, or even falling over.

In that case if I position myself correctly perhaps it could fix that hump on my back. Finally they will stop calling me Igor.

The magnets aren't strong enough to cause a problem with a TV from that distance- I doubt they'll cause a problem for a person. Besides- magnetically shielded speakers are relatively new and people have survived with them. If you're concerned, move a little farther away- the field decreases to 1/4 every time you double the distance.
