M80's with LPA-1

In looking for a subwoofer I showed my fiance the EP350 and she decide that she liked the Boston Cherry color. She then realizes that it would not match the rest of my speakers, since the are black. She then ask me if I would want to get speakers that would match the cherry color. Duh.... So I showed her the M80's and she liked them. My only fear is that the LPA-1 wont be able to handle these big guys. I am pretty sure that it will I just would like a few other peoples points of view. Thanks!

Speaker options

Consider going for the EP500 sub and the M60 speakers. The M60s will be an easy load for any amp or receiver. However, the LPA-1 will have no problem with 4 ohm speakers. I have one driving my Onix Reference speakers (all 4 ohms) and 2 of the channels driving a distributed audio system with 4-6 ohm impedance.

For subs, also check out the MFW-15 from av123. 2 for $1k or 1 for $600 and they are available in REAL wood veneer.

She would like for all for all of the speakers to match, which is why I would more then likely go with a sub from Axiom. I know its not the best deal in the would.


How would the M60s compare in sound to my NHTs, I am wanting to upgrade as well.

Anyways, an LPA-1 will do a fine job, as your M80's are quite efficient and do not require much power to reach reference levels.

You should have no problem driving those speakers.

Cool, thanks for the input guys. I ordered samples of the Rosenut and Boston Cherry, from SVS and Axiom, to see how well they match. PB-12 plus looks pretty nice, maybe a bit large though.

I dont know if this comment is about the v3 version because they have recently changed over to i believe the same cabinet and driver as the EP500, only the amplifiier is different. So I suspect it is better than the original version that they were selling not all that long ago.

I was under the impression that it has always shared the same driver. enclosure I don't know.

but it doesn't really matter when even the EP500 is a hyped up sub.

If you are option to other options, check out the real rosewood and cherry veneers available on the X-series speakers from AV123. Their MFW-15 sub that just started shipping did did very well in craigsub's testing and you can buy 2 for the price of 1 EP500.

I have an SVS SB12-Plus sub and the rosenut finish is a very close match to Rosewood veneer on my Onix Ref 1's.

Just to let others who may read this thread know that the M80's require HUGE amounts of power to play with any kind of loud volume. I can easily shut down my MPS-1 amp with loud music or soundtracks and yes the MPS-1 is 4 ohm stable as well.

How loud do you crank them? Do you have an spl meter? What sort of music do you usually play? I had that song No One Knows by Queens Of The Stone Age playing really loud this afternoon and it sounded really good to me The spl meter needle was peaking just over 100db
