Lost a CD, But Gained Something Because of It!

I found one of my CD's was missing the disc several days ago. It is T-Bone Burnett's "The Criminal Under My Own Hat" from 1992. It's one of my top 25 CD's probably and I always wished it would get re-issued on vinyl. It was not originally ever on vinyl. So I went on the interwebs to look for another CD. Several available, so that'll not be a problem. But I found out a limited release of it on vinyl came out in December. I almost missed that! So I ordered one. Limited to 1000 copies, numbered. Amazon says 100. That of course is a typo. Says 1000 on Discogs. Anyway... WOW! I didn't order the CD after all. I may someday since it can be had cheap. It has been ripped onto my computer for 25 years.

OTOH if you have a good rip of it, you don't really need the cd except from a "collection" point of view, which I somewhat understand....but if I lost a disc and had a rip, I wouldn't be too concerned. I wouldn't be buying a vinyl version, tho.

I really love that album though. The CD rip is only 128 kbps. If it was 320, I'd call it a day.

Well I never rip at 128kbps....always FLAC. I can convert to 320 from there for my truck's current player (but it has developed issues and the next one handles flac, so no need for it).

The transfer rate from a USB stick to HDD on our Jeep is horribly slow. The time savings by using MP3s was well worth it. Maybe not an issue on newer vehicles but I have not come across a manufacturer that uses top USB speeds on their USB ports. Not USB-A any way. With USB-C becoming more common hopefully transfer speeds will improve.

My 2019 Dodge Journey Crossroad doesn't have a hdd. That's fine. I just drag whatever I feel like playing for the day into my mp3 BT player and Bob's your uncle.

The Jeep has a HDD and you need to transfer to it? Didn't know that was a thing with car audio....

I said above that is in my top 25 CD's. More like top 10. It is likely a fact that I won't gain much if anything with the LP as it's probably from the digital masters. Still though, it has been on my list of CD's that I thought should be re-issued on vinyl. No indication that it is a remaster or if T-Bone is involved in the reissue. It was $35 on Amazon. Not bad for something appearing out of nowhere that I wanted to see for years. Had I not lost the very replaceable CD, dollars to doughnuts I'd have found out too late about the reissue and the $$$ would be north of $250.

I know the Supra has some internal storage. I've tried to transfer music from my USB drive to it, but it tells me there isn't enough space. Never bothered trying to figure out just how much space there is since MP3 over USB works just fine.

It's the only vehicle we have owned with that feature (2012 Grand Cherokee). Works pretty well. I load each album in a folder and you can play by folder or pull up the complete list of songs. With over 1,000 songs we just play them alphabetically which randomizes the music well enough. Easily room for 3,000 or 4,000 files and it never skips. (I assume it's a mechanical hard drive.) My 2021 Subaru has radio and satellite and I can stream from my phone but it needs a wired connection. Newer models can stream wirelessly via buetooth.

Interesting, but then haven't bought a new vehicle in many years (my main ride is a 07 GMC van with an aftermarket sound system and the '05 ML350 before that had a 6cd changer but no usb capability at all :) ). I've been using a 128 gig usb stick in my head unit. It doesn't have a random feature, reminds me I want to see if the next head unit has that capability....

The Jeep has a USB slot which not only uploads to the hard drive but I can also play from it, but the port is next the display screen and the USB stick would be sticking out into the cabin. I know it would only be a matter of time before I knocked it and broke the port so I am not taking any chances. :D
The Subaru has the ports nicely tucked away so I could use a USB stick but I get the same functionality from my phone. I got a deal on Sirius XM so I've been using that for a while as the selection is pretty good and no commercials.

This LP arrived today and I am playing it now. Things I noticed: no frills on the packaging. No gatefold, just reproduction of the CD liner as a two-sided 12x12 insert. No notes about the re-issue. Red/black marble vinyl looks cool. Plays so dead quite it is just unreal. I have number 948 of 1000. Sonically, as good or better than the CD. On the song "Primitives", the cello gets down there, like way down there! I think I know what I might want to hear next at @TLS Guy 's place. This is one amazing production. It sounds better than anything else that has been on my platter. The youtubes below are obviously from the CD.

A friend of mine holding his rather large and rambunctious 3 year old didn't manage to hold on too well and the boy whacked a longish usb stick and bent it, fortunately didn't harm playback ability. Started using the Sandisk Ultra Fit usb units that don't stick out much at all....

These are what I use in my vehicles too.

Mechanical skipping isn't likely on a hard drive because there's less mass in the pickup vs a CD player, which needed to focus on the disc.
