I'm a big believer of FLAC; I have a large collection of it and I definitely notice the AQ difference, but the more options the better.

MP3HD? The marketing guys certainly have targeted joe.
"Ahhhh! It has HD. It must be good!"
As for royalty fees to interested partners, Thomson charges 75 cents for each PC software decoder, and between $2.50 and $5 for each codec, while a hardware decoder is 75 cents and a hardware codec costs $1.25. Thomson had no announcements as to any hardware partners that have committed to supporting the new format, though expects to do so in the near future
Here's wishing for a quick death :D

.flac is massively supported throughout the taping community, archive community, digital downloads, etc. There is firmware or software for just about every portable player to allow for .flac playback.

I seriously doubt it will be dislodged as king of lossless anytime soon.

The royalty-free nature of FLAC, not to mention it's OPEN SOURCE, is the big kicker.

My car doesn't support FLAC. Lack of mobile support is one of the many things that killed DVD-A/SACD.
I have a Kenwood Excelon KVT 819DVD that plays it all. dvd audio, sacd, and flac. With the flac I have to convert it to a type of dvd audio format. Allows me to put up to 7 flac albums on a dvd.

If you have to convert FLAC to another format to play it, your player doesn't support FLAC. But converting from lossless to another lossless won't hurt the AQ! And that's one of the beauties of it.

MP3 is still the king of the hill when it comes to portable audio. As long as Joe Sixpack prefers lossy MP3 over better (in terms of AQ) formats, MP3 will uphold it's reign of terror. techdirt.com/articles/20090302/0130073943.shtml+

I use mostly Apple Lossless and FLAC as they're smaller in size than a WAV and can be converted back with no loss. I like Apple Lossless cause it contains a good amount of tag info.
