Looking to pair a sub to a set of AV-40s

Hello citizens,

So I just purchased a pair of AV-40s from woot.com today. I'm awfully excited for them - but from what I can gather from my readings, I will not be happy with their lack of bass. Enter subwoofer. Apparently, though, hooking up a subwoofer to a set of AV-40s is a bit more involved than just finding a sub in my price range, buying it, and connecting. From the little I could find from Google, it might be necessary to purchase additional equipment, or that if I buy a sub that is too powerful(??) they will explode and probably kill me in the process. I don't know if any of that is true - the truth is, I haven't the slightest idea how any of this stuff works. What I want at the end of the day is just a decent setup that will work and not break the bank in the process. I'm not looking for top of the line audiophile grade equipment suggestions - my ears are hardly functional as it is.

My TL;DR:

  • I need a sub to hook up to my AV-40s
  • I only want to spend around $100
  • My standards are relatively low, so while $100 might not be enough for a sub to satisfy the enthusiasts out there, it will more than likely keep me happy ( and I won't be happy if I can't pay my bills)
  • I don't know anything about audio hardware/software/anything.

Thanks in advance! :)
