i am looking to buy a subwoofer fairly soon and have been doing lots of research on which are the best bang for the buck. i am new to home audio so i had no idea what i was looking for. i pretty much want a damn loud sub for less than 300 bucks. im not so picky as to how perfect it sounds, but i do not want a boomy sub. i have some logitech speakers and the sub is just pure boom and does not provide accurate bass production at all. so i need a very loud sub geared more toward music. i have been interested in the infinity's ps212 sub that is around 300$, it had good reviews. also i have stumbled on the BIC america subwoofers and the dayton sub from parts express. I just cant decide on which to buy. any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

ya but the thing is i can get an infinity ps212 for the same price and its a 12" and has more power. i know that size and power are not everything but will the daytona really sound better and be louder than an infinity ps212?

Power ratings on powered subwoofers are completely useless. It does NOT tell you anything about how loud or how low a subwoofer will play. You see, how loud it will play will depend upon the efficiency of the woofer. And there can be such differences in efficiency between woofers that one that is hooked up to an amplifier with 10 times the power can still be less loud than another one with 1/10 the power.

As for the size of the woofer, that also tells you pretty much nothing about performance, as a good quality 10" woofer can be vastly superior to a poorly made 15" woofer.

But since most people don't know these things, some manufacturers take advantage of consumer's ignorance, and put a cheap large woofer with a big amplifier (or one rated to be high in some less than open and honest way) to sell to suckers who believe it must be better because it is bigger and more powerful.

Here you go. Go through the list and actual measurements for someone who has a pretty good idea how to to it, TN, ;)
Then see what you can afford:

All of the above subs are good. I have an SVS PB-12NSD and absolutely love it.

A good choice. The BIC H100 and eD subs are also worth a look.
I second the BICs, they got a lot of decent reviews for lower price subs. If you have a little more $$$$$$$. AV123's MFW-15 has been receiving RAVE reviews lately.

Why do you want it so loud? In most music there is little power in the range of subs. It is movie effects that have significant power in the sub range. It is balance of the entire frequency range that counts. Good subs have a gentle footprint, but deliver the goods when reallyy called upon. In your price range more likely than not, you will end up with another boomy sub.

I would save and double the budget.
