Some times they are. I've seen lots of A, B, A+B rotary switches on decent integrated amps.
If the load halves what's the difference unless your listening at background levels or have a pair of Klipschhorns, it's still a big demand on any amp. Again it's not what manufacturers intended it to be for.
Personally the application always dictates the solution.
