Hi, i am currently in the market looking to build up my home theater. unfortunately, financially i am stuck looking into mid range receivers. right now i almost have my mind set on getting the sony str-dn1000 receiver. i have read alot of mostly positive reviews on the receiver. i am new to shopping for home theater so i am kinda nervous until i get some feedback from some people who really know all about the a/v world. i accidentally stumbled upon this site today and already have learned alot. any help if anyone has experienced the str-dn1000 or even could recomnd another mid range priced receiver would be greatly appreciated. also any suggestions for some "cheaper" speakers with great sound would be great as well. i am gonna get the ball rolling on starting to buy sometime next week. thank you in advane for any help! -Matthew

Most people here will tell you that there is very little difference in sound for AVRs in the low/mid price range. Pick one that has the features that are important to you. I would avoid rushing into purchasing any gear. A little time doing some research and asking some questions is a good idea. It can save you money in the long run by saving you from purchases you might not be completely satisfied with. First, give us a budget or at least an approximation for what you are willing to spend. Things like room size and percentage of music/movies you will use the system for will affect the types of recommendations you get. Have you actually gone and listened to any speaker brands? You may find there are certain speakers you love, and those you really can't stand. By knowing what you have listened to and you thoughts on them, others may recommend speakers you might not be aware of or overlooked.

You really have to demo audio equipment yourself to make a decision. Taking opinions on what to get is fine, but you really have to hear it for yourself to make the final decision. First question I have to ask you is budget?

Advice on cheap and great sounding speaker is easy:
pick 3 pairs of Behringer 2030p and a Dayton SUB-120 HT Sub
Add AVR with features you need . (I'd personally not huge sony fan)
Going with Yamaha, denon or pioneer will probably be better choice.

Thank you all for your responses. i realized last night after i posted that i didnt mention my budget and left my description too broad. im looking to spend about a thoiusand bucks on everything over the next few months. i thought the avr would be a start and build off of that. i am taking the advice of going to stores and actually hearing speakers for myself. I do have 5 speakers now(some extreme cheapies that c ame with a theatre in a box) that i have been contemplating using for a few months and just spend a little more now on the avr. I have been looking at the 500 dollar range of avrs. and am def gonna get a sub now rather than use the one with the speakers.

The room is not a big one( 16x16). dont watch too many movies really, maybe one here and there. I watch pretty much sports and a few shows (lost baby!) Play some xbox, and have a tendency to party so music is played alot.

The Denon 590/1610 AVRs are good - Audyssey MultEQ room correction and the lowest priced AVRs that have the MultEQ. Onkyo makes a couple of good AVR in that price range - the 607/RC160 - you can get both of those refurbished here for slightly less. The Onkyo's have Audyssey 2EQ - a step down from the Denon's MultEQ but still works pretty good.

Onkyo's will give you great set of features, unfortunately their newer models, lacking in power department...
Denons (refub possibly), Yamaha and Pioneer would be choices in this order
