Looking for bookshelf or cheap floorstanders for under $600

Alright, so heres my predicament. I recently got married and costs went way over budget. I had initially wanted to buy a marantz 6004/6005 or a Pioneer sc-25 with a pair of Aperion 6Ts. However, that dream went out the window and i have to dramatically reduce my budget. I've already figured the HK 3490 would work well for now as I'm only going to be running two speakers anyway. Which brings me to my point:

What speakers should I pair with the receiver? I was thinking Aperion 6B due to their good reputation, and i know little can be found in the way of floorstanding speaker in my new price range. However, i read some good things about Infinity P362's on here.

The speakers use will likely be 80/20 movies/music, but when I play music I want them to sing. If i get floorstanders they will flank my fireplace, but bookshelf will likely be on the mantle angled down to the seating position.

any ideas?

I hear nothing but good things about either. You can try the Aperions with a risk-free 30 day trial. You might be able to find the P362s locally, and if so, you could try listening to them in store or buying and returning them if the store has a decent return policy.

Aperion has a great reputation. That said, the 6B are horribly inefficient speakers (82dB).

If you get monitors like the 6B, you're much better off having them on stands... instead of on a mantle.

For $600, you might be able to get a used pair of Ascend Sierra-1's.

OneCall has the long discontinued Boston Acoustics VR3 towers for $613/pr shipped. I ran a pair of these for years and as long as you have the room they'd be a great choice. Best Buy/Magnolia sold these for $1250/pr before they were discontinued.

They also have them bundled with a timbre matched VRC center for $810 shipped.

You could easily pick up a pair of used Studio 20s for that price and they will fill a large room when coupled with decent amplification.

I havent had a chance to listen to magnepan, although I am quite aware of their reputation. I am a huge fan of martin logan's, and would love to pick up a pair or puritys.

New development. Apparently one of the stereo shops is offering a pair of PSB T55's for 549. Seems like a good deal. opinions?

What you should get is totally dependent upon your taste in speakers. At that price point for 2 channel, I would buy:

Whether they would suit your tastes or not is another matter.
Yeah, those Magnepan MMGs look pretty tempting for $600.:D

Hmm, I think my little daughter needs some speakers in her bedroom.

For the Infinity P362, there are local FRYS stores that still have them for < $300/pr.

And if you are lucky, some local FRYS store may also have the MartinLogan Preface for only $300 each:eek:

They did deep enough to avoid having to use a sub for most music. The only excpetions would be rap and pipe organ music. I have the T45s and I run them full range when doing two channel audio and I never miss the bass from my sub. I listen to a wide range of music from jazz, blues, classical, classic rock, alternative, indy, new wave and they handle it all genres really well

Yes, I think they are a great deal, as they have many of the characteristics of the better models, but have a very tempting price. The biggest differences between them and the higher models is maximum volume and depth of the bass, though there are some other improvements also. (On the other hand, being smaller, they can fit in smaller places.)

For me, there is no other speaker I would consider at that price point, if space and amplification permit. Other people, of course, value different characteristics, and for them, different speakers may be a better choice.

I have a pair of Boston Asoustics vr960 that Im trying to get rid of. I also have 5.0 Miriage Nanosats to for sale with stands for 4 of them. Neither of these speakers have any probs with them at all I just got the upgrade fever when I moved and bought the Def Tech stff as you can see from what I own. So if interested hit me up.
