Looking for advice on speakers

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, I’ve started planning on what I want my speakers and sub to be, and hopefully will have them all set up in the next couple weeks! I will go subs first unless a deal pops up for my front stage. Thank you to everyone again!

I currently have a pretty basic 7.1 setup but am looking to replace/upgrade everything and eventually end up at a 7.2.4 setup. I currently have the following as my speakers:

Budget isn’t too important as I’ll be slowly buying and upgrading over several months. I don’t want to go overboard, but I also want nice quality, maybe like $1,500-$2,000 on the whole setup but I’m flexible. I mostly use the system for movies, music (mostly rock), and sports. I would probably prefer tower speakers for my fronts just based on my room setup but bookshelf’s could work too.

People on Reddit suggested replacing my Sub first, and while I do intend to replace it, I’d prefer to start with my speakers first. I’d prefer to upgrade my Center/FL/FR first, followed by my Surround and surround backs, followed by my sub and ending with some Atmos speakers

Anyway what do you think? Where should I begin?
My thoughts.

If the system is mostly for movies...I'd upgrade the sub(s) first. Why?...the CVs will handle dialog and sound effects okay...with solid sub(s), you'll notice the money spent more if you upgrade the sub. Having great speakers for a movie based system is sorta like buying a 911 Porsche and driving it 35 mph to the corner grocery and back once a day

If music is a bigger part of the usage for you're just itching to replace the LCR. Get out as much as you can and demo.

Budget...at least you're giving yourself some wiggle room. Speaking of budgets. Since you already have a 7.1 you can answer this? Are you playing back very much in 7.1 now?

Movies most important...I would upgrade the sub 1st, then work on the LCR....use what I have for side surrounds right now, add the atmos and go with a 5.2.4 ...add the additional rear surrounds for your 7.2.4 when you get the extra funds.

Yeah for music only then you can drive the porsche at maybe 36 mph ! Maybe just 15 when it comes to multich music, tho. :) Movies can have good audio content, including very well mixed music, that deserves good speakers just as much as for "music". If all you can afford is 2 and mostly prefer 2ch music, then put your money where your interests lie. If you like multich don't cheap out on the speakers. My .02.

You're right LTHD, I'm struggling to find where we disagree.

I'm assuming the OP is cash flowing the upgrade and I thought the LCR was always part of the $2k he was looking to spend. The sub suggestion imo is more bang for the buck, pardon the pun as a 1st dagger into the budget.

SQ movies vs music...great speakers do it all well, HT and music. Good speakers ( I use Klipsch as an ex.) can be pretty pretty good at movies and just okay (subjective) for music...I've heard many such systems, thus the comment about the porsche.
