Maybe this will work for now

Dayton SUB-120 12" 150 Watt Powered Subwoofer
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-635

Also check www.Amazon.com for the same sub.
I'd have to say for your budget this is probably about the best you're going to get.

OTOH, and in my humble opinion, having been down this road and learned the hard way, you simply can't spend only $100-$150 on a sub without basically throwing $100-$150 away, because hardly anything in that range is going to really give you any kind of performance that is noteworthy.

If I were you, I'd stick it out sub-less for a while, save your money and get a real sub. :)

My sentiments would be the same as most of the other posters here. Buying a smaller, inexpensive sub, while providing you with some low end in the short term, will only result in you buying a replacement in a short while.

Having said that, I'd say Mazer's suggestion would be the closest you could come to what you're looking for at that price tag. There's also an Athena AS-P4100 available from Audio Advisor for $149 (shipping not included) that might be a decent solution for you in the interim. I had (still have but not using) the predecessor to this sub and for what it costs, it does a relatively good job assuming you're expectations aren't too much and you're not using it in an overly large room.

If there's any way you can hold off to at least save up closer to $300, you'll do much better, but if not, try one of these two for now... -TD

If your on a budget, dollar for dollar its pretty hard to beat the psw-10 from polk. I bought one new on sale for $150 cad, half of what this store usually retails it for. read the reviews on it in polks site. I left one (C Roberts) definatley worh the money and hits some very low notes down to 35hz they claim. I play sound off bass beats with it sometimes just for fun, it produces the lows very well but cant take over 3/4 volume before it starts farting, but thats really pounding on it. Its sounds great with music/vids/movies. When I catch it on sale again I plan on adding another one.

id spend money here or here before investing in the polk sub;)

The Scamp does sound very promising to say the least, but until a few folks outside the inner sanctum can get their hands on these, they're still an unknown.

I'd considered suggesting the LFM-2 from Outlaw as well, very similar to the X-Sub I believe. Outlaw's currently running a special on them for $199, $100 less than usual. The only reason I didn't was shipping will likely add another $30-40 and it's already over the $150 price tag the OP bumped it up to.

Considering the size and specs of the LFM-2 though, this might be a nice option for those w/a need in a small area... -TD

Since Im looking for just a little bit of boost on the bass (and Im a firm beliver in a flat equalizer), Im thinking a 100 watt passive subwoofer with a DIY box might be a good option. I was looking on partsexpress.com and they have some excellent deals. I can spend around $150 total on the project. Would this be a good idea? What sub/box design would you guys suggest?

bandphan, have you ever auditioned the sub in question? Id put it against subs upwards of double its cost (wholesale) and rated higher and bank on it. Ive owned a few subs in my time, and I also have a very picky ear. not to flame you, and I respect everyones opinion, but for the money and what the guy was looking for its a great choice imo. Im now useing it with my pc along with energy towers (I was useing with my audio and video but have since undated). Now with the pc and a rotel 50x2 reciever and it sounds pretty cherry if I must say so myself.
